Obama Now Wants Your Pocket Knife
Pro-Gun New Hampshire ^ | 06/04/2009 | Evan F. Nappen, Esq.

Beware! That folding knife in your pocket may turn you into a criminal if the Obama administration gets its way. Although there has been a lot of fear and speculation that the new administration wants to take your guns, the most pressing threat now is actually to your pocket knives. With the changing of the guard at U.S. Customs, that agency has now embarked on redefining "switchblades" under federal law to include a wide variety of one hand opening knives that never were intended to be prohibited. In fact, many of the knives U.S. Customs now seek to prohibit under the Federal Switchblade Law had not even been invented at the time of its enactment!

This new proposed U.S. Customs regulation is so broad that thousands of pocket knives will fall under its sweep and millions of knife owners will be affected. The problem is not simply that imports will be banned (which is bad enough), but that the "agency determination" will be used by domestic courts and law enforcement to determine what a "switchblade" is under both federal and state laws. Many states, including New Hampshire, fail to define switchblades and simply rely on the federal definition.

Kinves are either tools or weapons.

Those that are weapons are covered by the second ammendment.

Arms is arms.

Do I even have to point out that knives are one of the easiest weapons to make?

All you need is a material that can hold an edge – metal, plastic, stone, etc....

And a way to sharpen said material? Stone, concrete, etc.....

“In reality...”

We disagree.

I think you’re blaming government instead of people who misuse government. That’s like blaming guns for murder instead of blaming the people who use guns to murder.

Dad got me a spiffy Kershaw for Mother’s Day. With a safety (you know me...) and everything! A good thing, in Nebraska it has to have a blade longer than 3 1/2 inches to be considered a knife!

“agency determination”

this is the way we slide into tyranny. Empowering “agencies” to make arbitrary “determinations”.

-- What's next, letter openers? --

They are covered by a regulation pertaining to the maximum length of a fixed-blade object. The federal regulation at issue is about folding objects.

Point being, letter openers aren't "next," they are already covered.

I guess knitting needles will be next on the list. Well, as a Great American once said, ... only when the pry them from my cold, cold hands. I knit socks for the soldiers in Irag and Afghanistan, so I guess that puts me on some Obama list somewhere!

-- Each day I think that I can no longer be amazed at what the libs are doing, or the willingness of the average citizen to poo poo it. And each day it seems to get more frightening. Unless there is some sort of mass epiphany of average Americans, and soon, we are cooked. And I don't believe in those kinds of miracles. --

It's not been just the libs doing this. It's an elitist/political class sort of thing. In spite of that small difference as to assigning identity to the disarmament group, you and I share the sentiment about the public's state of wakefulness and spirit of independence.

Was at the Blade Show in Atlanta last weekend. Head of one big-name butterfly-knife-making company said they’re preemptively restricting sales of butterfly knives, hoping to help stave off the pending redefinition.

Problem with the proposed ruling is that the law in question is actually quite clear about what is covered - to the point that whatever is not covered is clearly not covered, and there is case law establishing it.

Looks like another abuse of power by enacting invalid laws/regulations with a “if you don’t like it, take it to court - and we’ll tie up the issue there for years and/or sway the judges”.
