Falling short of Kyoto goals, Boulder raises carbon tax

Program could create door-to-door energy consultants.

It’s time for an in-your-face approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the Boulder City Council decided Thursday night.

The council unanimously approved increasing the city’s voter-approved carbon tax from its minimum to its maximum level beginning Aug. 6, providing an additional $810,000 annually toward meeting the city’s carbon-cutting goals.

The tax, built into utility bills, is expected to help the city reach 95 percent of the Kyoto Protocol — which calls for reducing greenhouse gas emissions 7 percent below 1990 levels — before the tax ends in 2013.

Kara Mertz, an environmental affairs manager for the city, said the program is designed to “blanket the community, neighborhood by neighborhood ... to create a community buzz” about going green.

She said the “two techs and a truck” initiative would also create up to 1,200 jobs.

Good for Boulder! I am so happy for them. Wanting to pay more taxes for absolutely no benefit. It warms my heart to see such liberal stupidity at work.

Can I ask a question..

How can the City charge a tax to follow a treaty that is not ratified by the US Congress?

The council unanimously approved increasing the city’s voter-approved carbon tax from its minimum to its maximum level

If the people of Boulder had reduced their fossil fuel usage, put up windmills and solar collectors, dug holes in the ground for geothermal, and everything else the green movement wants, then the city council would have been crying about the reduction in revenue on the carbon tax and would have had to unanimously vote to increase the carbon tax from its minimum to its maximum level. Who couldn't see that giving the city a range of tax rates allowed would result in it quickly going to the maximum?

Boulder has a captive “Commie” population. The Peoples Republic of Boulder is a University town that feeds off University and sucks on everything it can. I was there on business for a few days back in April. The place makes my skin crawl!

... before the tax ends in 2013

Yeah, it'll end then. For God's sake, they just recently removed a tax (on cell phones) that was instituted to garner dollars to fund the War of 1812!!

Maybe Boulder could try raising taxes per procedure on their killer of viable babies - or as Hern bills himself “specialist in late abortion for fetal disorders”.

I live in Boulder County (not the city). The citizens of Boulder are retro-hippies mostly living off trust funds and other people’s money. Thus, they have no tie to reality. I am selling and moving out of this county and state because it is going into the crapper with the influx of liberal idiots!

When Boulder decides to do something about their REAL problem, destructive wind, then I might listen. Pick on carbon, a trace element in the atmosphere, and the very important 1900 gigatons in the biosphere, while ignoring a climate event that causes thousands of dollars in property damage every year. Typical of the lack of common sense in government. I would immediately terminate my time in Boulder had I been stupid enough to live their in the first place.

Remember, Boulder is the place where Ward Churchill actually became a Department Head at Colorado University - having absolutely no intellect, academic credentials, or brains.

Now, if their lib arts academics are largely jokes, let’s consider what kind of clowns get elected to public office.

Boulder, a cesspool of commies, is getting what they deserve. “Green” has taken over. Two daughters are graduates of CU (’87 & ‘93) and they are flaming liberals. They have sipped the kool-aid often and will not listen to another point of view. I wish that I had been more aware of CU’s faculty makeup and the prevailing politics on campus. I might have been able to offer conservative views for them to consider.

The scam that is global warming is so easy to sell to libs, it should be ruled a felony!
