SACRAMENTO, Calif.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says he's "happy" illegal immigrants get state services and says they're not to blame for California's $24.3 billion budget gap.
Schwarzenegger, an immigrant himself, says the estimated $4 billion to $5 billion the state spends on illegal immigrants annually is a "small percentage" of the deficit.
The Republican governor told The Sacramento Bee's editorial board on Friday that it's easy to "scapegoat" illegal immigrants. But he says the state's budget has a much deeper spending imbalance.
He noted the federal government requires California to provide emergency health care and education to illegal immigrants. And he says illegal immigrants often help pick the state's crops and construct its buildings.
If only things were that simple.
The reality is that the consequences of illegal immigration into California since 1960 consume almost 50% of the General Fund expenditures. From public health, to our criminal justice system, to K-12 education and social services, the consequences of illegal Mexican immigration consumes just short of a majority of General Fund expenditures.
Ok, we’ve got to call them on this. In the first line, they say that we’re talking about services to illegal immigrants. In the next paragraph, they say that Arnold is an immigrant himself.
STOP THE EQUIVALENCE. There is no equivalence between illegals and Arnold legally coming to America years ago. There is no reason for this to be mentioned in the story, as if Arnold is grappling with providing services to people like himself. The illegals are not immigrants like he was.
I beg to disagree, Governor, but TWENTY PERCENT is HARDLY a "small percentage". That said, the actual cost is probably 3-4 times that which was stated, which would mean that illegal immigrants are likely responsible for ALMOST ALL of the projected deficit. JM2Cents.
The first two sentences show how the media conflates this entire issue.

Arnold’s comments are the railroad spikes into CA’s coffin. I don’t think another Republican will be elected Governor for another generation. Other than drafting retired Congressman Duncan Hunter for Governor, I don’t see how CA can survive.

Yep. Plus you have to factor in the illegals in prison, the children of illegals who are using state services, and the illegals working under the table and not giving the state tax revenues.
Here's the thing that's frustrating with Arnold: He had a mandate in 2003 to put a stop to this, he was already a legendary movie star. That's why he was elected. He could have made the case for ending services to illegals in a common-sense way and still kept his moderate credentials. I mean, why give tax dollars to people who are not citizens? Even the idiotic liberals in CA would have understood this and supported him. Maybe the other problems of bureaucracy, envirowackoism, and regular citizens mooching off the system would have existed, but at least the budget deficit would have been much more manageable.
Arnold talks big with other peoples money. It’s not his to give out to illegals. Case closed. Same goes for the schmucks in the CA Assembly. Bleeding heart Liberals have destroyed the State and the country. Makes me ill.

If I just arrived from Mars I would deduce that the "illegal immigrants" are paid public money for their services in the private sector.
Arnold “immigrating” is NOT and NEVER HAS BEEN the same thing as people coming here illegally, deliberately bypassing and breaking OUR laws.
It’s just nuts. Mexico beats the living tar out of illegals THEY catch coming into their country, take whatever money they have with them, pack them in buses, and drive them deep back into their home countries. They don’t get to have parades about being vital to Mexico, try to guilt Mexico for being mean, say they have rights to do that, and try to say they ought to be allowed to stay because they have a right to be there.
I say in this one aspect, we ought to treat Mexican illegals (and all the other illegals) like Mexico treats illegals in their country.
