Barack and Michelle Obama's fairytale love story of an adoring couple propelled on to the international stage has caught the imagination of millions.
Their regular Friday "date nights" make the television news, and there was a stir recently when they caught Air Force One for a night at the theatre in Manhattan.
This weekend, in the aftermath of the D-Day celebrations, they are in Paris with their young daughters - having turned down an invitation for dinner with President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla in favour of a more intimate family event.
But it was not always wedded bliss for the First Couple. A new book, Renegade, about Mr Obama's unlikely run for the presidency, recounts a tense period in 2000 when the Obamas' marriage was on the brink of collapse because of his restless political hunger and the family's shattered finances.
"There was little conversation and even less romance," wrote the Birmingham-born Mr Wolffe, who covered Obama's campaign for Newsweek magazine. "She was angry at his selfishness and careerism; he thought she was cold and ungrateful."
At the time, Mr Obama was stuck on the lowest step of the political ladder. As a mere state senator in Illinois, he had challenged a popular incumbent in a Democratic primary by running against Bobby Rush, a former Black Panther from Chicago. Mr Obama was trounced by a dismal 2-1 margin.
His wife was new to motherhood, at home with their first daughter Malia, just two years old at the time. "She hated the failed race for Congress in 2000, and their marriage was strained by the time their younger daughter, Sasha, was born. Politics seemed like a waste of time to Michelle," the book says.
Mr Obama's troubles were compounded when he discovered that he was not on the guest

actually, I hope his marriage is not something that has to suffer b/c of his being POTUS.
Leave that alone.
The Myth is beginning to unravel.
Larry Sinclair says he had a tryst with Zero in 1999, I think.
I agree with you.
Anyone going to such extremes to portray himself as some idyllic husband has side action going on.
The A$$hole in Chief keeps telling us to sacrifice. Yet lots of financial analysis and now this article tells us they were living WAY beyond their means back in 2000.
More of the usual liberal hypocrisy.
Apparently, this happened before she was proud of America.
Let me get this straight: in 2000 he was up to his ears in debt and couldn’t get a seat at the DNC, but in 2004 he was the keynote speaker and a shoo-in for the Senate, and in 2008 the great black hope?
What’s wrong with this picture?
Cue porn music.
Political handlers can perform miracles..
“Whats wrong with this picture?”
It’s success, Chicago-style!!/s;)
Black culture doesn’t embrace marriage which is why black culture is in the state that it’s in. The women give it away because they have no feminine dignity, then the rest of us take financial care of their irresponsibility and suffer the crimes committed by their unmentored, drop out sociopathic offspring who have nothing but crappy role models.
I can’t stand zero or his battleship-hipped wife, but if their marriage and family life serve as an inspiration for black Americans to hitch up their pants and get hitched, all other Americans will benefit. Anything would be an improvement.
Sounds like Rezko and her Pay to Play job at the hospital helped their marriage too. Just like in the mafia.
Pray for America

I don’t know any porn music. Would the theme from “Shaft” do?;)
Anything that draws our attention away from his desire to destroy the American way of life is just an interesting sideshow.
No objection to your posting it, but please remember the real issue here.
He’s a gay, narcissistic drama queen.
Of course they are having problems.
We agree. There’s plenty to critize Barry on w/o resorting to going after his family.
Bad move tactically IMO.
