Barack and Michelle Obama's fairytale love story of an adoring couple propelled on to the international stage has caught the imagination of millions.
Their regular Friday "date nights" make the television news, and there was a stir recently when they caught Air Force One for a night at the theatre in Manhattan.
This weekend, in the aftermath of the D-Day celebrations, they are in Paris with their young daughters - having turned down an invitation for dinner with President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla in favour of a more intimate family event.
But it was not always wedded bliss for the First Couple. A new book, Renegade, about Mr Obama's unlikely run for the presidency, recounts a tense period in 2000 when the Obamas' marriage was on the brink of collapse because of his restless political hunger and the family's shattered finances.
"There was little conversation and even less romance," wrote the Birmingham-born Mr Wolffe, who covered Obama's campaign for Newsweek magazine. "She was angry at his selfishness and careerism; he thought she was cold and ungrateful."
At the time, Mr Obama was stuck on the lowest step of the political ladder. As a mere state senator in Illinois, he had challenged a popular incumbent in a Democratic primary by running against Bobby Rush, a former Black Panther from Chicago. Mr Obama was trounced by a dismal 2-1 margin.
His wife was new to motherhood, at home with their first daughter Malia, just two years old at the time. "She hated the failed race for Congress in 2000, and their marriage was strained by the time their younger daughter, Sasha, was born. Politics seemed like a waste of time to Michelle," the book says.

The Obamas were virtually broke as recently as early as 2005 when Obama was sworn-in as a Rat Senator. Suddenly, Michelle gets a six-figure job (and which magically gets eliminated when she becomes First Lady) and the Obamas are swimming in cash. What we’ve just witnessed over the past election cycle is the greatest collapse of investigative journalism in the history of this nation.
In a pinch, it will work.
Somebody got behind, funded, and groomed this guy. Plain and simple. Lots of money, lots of influence.
...and even then, without the TOTUS, half the time his off the cuff speeches and comments are almost incomprehensible and so broken up as to be unintelligable.

Michelle got a large pay raise after OB put pork in a bill to shuffle federal funds to her hospital.
Tactically? Since when is the British press worried about tactics or strategy when it comes to covering US Presidents? I wish our own press would start being more critical and skeptical of Obama.
I’m glad they are committed to their marriage and their daughters. Financial problems are typical marriage strainers, as are disagreements about jobs/careers. The one good thing the Obamas can do is be a good example of a committed, married couple, and if their younger fans give up the prison and prostitute look, that would be a bonus.
And so they lied about their donor base—I doubt anyone here is surprised about that.
I don’t think it is that great now. She is always quick to make snide remarks when they interview together. He doesn’t pick up. He’s never at home blah, blah, blah.
We're not attacking the couple personally, just financially and politically. BTW, Michelle got back!

Well, demolition would imply that they were destroyed from an outside force. I think they saw Obama and just said F it, this is our guy and we’re going to get him in there at all costs.

Michelle Obama still is angry. Obama still is a selfish careerist. Obama was doing a lot of cocaine at that time which might explain their maxed out credit cards and marital strains. He was also involved in homosexual relationships with Larry Sinclair and others. The book sounds like yet another propaganda piece providing false information about Obama.
How about “sabotage”...???
