State Sen. Creigh Deeds appears to be further separating himself from the other two contenders in the June 9 Democratic gubernatorial primary, according to a Public Policy Polling survey released two days before the election.
A Democrat from rural Bath County, Deeds now holds a double-digit lead (40 percent) over rivals Terry McAuliffe (26 percent) and Brian Moran (24 percent) for the party nomination.
The poll results follow a recent trend that has shown Deeds surging to the lead of the pack just weeks after earlier polls listed him third in the field.
Deeds current lead is beyond the poll's 3 percent margin of error. Conducted June 6-7, the automated telephone poll surveyed 1,082 likely primary voters.
A pollster at the firm attributed Deeds' late charge to several factors, including: A recent Washington Post endorsement which helped solidify his support in vote-rich Northern Virginia (home to McAuliffe and Moran), and undecided voters breaking for Deeds in the final days of the contest.
Still, ten percent of voters remain unsure who they will support, according to the poll, which gave Deeds leads in every region of the state except Hampton Roads, where McAuliffe is ahead.
"We continue to build momentum all across the Commonwealth," Deeds campaign manager Joe Abbey wrote in an e-mail after the poll's release. "We're fighting for every vote across Virginia."
The poll results also gave Jody Wagner a statistically significant lead (41 percent) over Mike Signer (12 percent) in the race for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor, though the poll indicates 42 percent of likely voters in that contest remain undecided.

I just can’t stand the thought of four years listening to McAwful say “jahhhhhbs for Virginia.”
At least Kaine spent a decade or two in Richmond.
As for McAuliffe, I’ll second that.
McAuliffe makes me sick.
The hinky eyebrow is bad enough. I don’t think I can take four years of McAwful’s smarmy look. And every time I look at him all I can think of is the Clintons. Ugh.

The Washington Post picked Deeds and wrote that McAuliffe is “a self described hustler”. They then proceeded to back pedal and say that it wasn’t meant as an insult. :)

Mr. McAuliffe would be an unpredictable choice, a self-described “hustler” who has vacuumed millions from donors as a Clinton confidante and former head of the Democratic National Committee. That’s not meant as a dig: Mr. McAuliffe fills a room, and it’s easy to imagine him jawboning businesses to move to Virginia or lawmakers to support his agenda. He has proved that he’s a quick study who can rattle off facts and figures about the state. Yet, Mr. McAuliffe’s promises have been as expansive as his personality, and he has offered no realistic way to foot the bill. It’s also unclear whether voters will give Mr. McAuliffe a pass for showing no interest in state politics or governance until setting his sights on the governor’s mansion.
Must have been WNIS ......Tidewater? Can’t believe McAuliffe has gotten the traction he has.
Sure hope Deeds doesn’t have one of those funny SW VA accents that the Dems found ever so grossly unsophisticated with Kilgore.
I got an email from a young friend encouraging me to vote for Deeds (as if!), saying she’d decided only over the weekend. Damned WaPo strikes again.

He doesn’t. I heard him speak some years back at a meeting on promoting legislation. He and republican Bobby Orrock were there.
One thing they both stressed, was the importance of their constituents’ thoughts on a given piece of legislation. We were told in no uncertain terms that the rest of the state’s voters were nowhere near as important to them.
I guess Deeds is counting on being elected to the Governor’s Mansion by the voters of Bath County. < / s >
I’m afraid the D candidate is going to be Deeds ... he’s picked up the Big Mo over the past week. I may have to go vote for Moran, after all. Ugh.
Honestly, I don’t think there’s anyway Moran can catch up. As much as it’s even more distasteful, it might do more good to vote for McAwful.

I tend to agree .. with Deeds gaining the Big Mo in the past week, D’s will probably divide into the two camps. Moran was a good option when it was a very tight 3-way race but it’s all gone Deeds’s way since end of last week.
Now, if I could only get myself to vote in that primary :(
