WASHINGTON — Single-use plastic bags, a staple of American life, have got to go, the United Nations' top environmental official said Monday.

Although recycling bags is on the rise in the United States, an estimated 90 billion thin bags a year, most used to handle produce and groceries, go unrecycled. They were the second most common form of litter after cigarette butts at the 2008 International Coastal Cleanup Day sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy, a marine environmental group.

"Single use plastic bags which choke marine life, should be banned or phased out rapidly everywhere. There is simply zero justification for manufacturing them anymore, anywhere," said Achim Steiner, executive director of the U.N. Environment Programme. His office advises U.N. member states on environmental policies.

Clearly somebody without a clue. I, for one, wrap all my garbage in these bags. Any time you see someone claim "there is no possibility of taking a position different than mine", then you've got somebody with a weak position.

I wouldn’t mind seeing the demise of thoses plastic bag. Lots of trees in my neighborhood catch those things and all you hear is the annoying plastic flutter in the wind for months until the bag is ripped loose.

and just like your typical lib: no solution to replace the paper bag..just emotional rantings to make themselves feel good.

> “Single use plastic bags which choke marine life,

- Herr Steiner, have you actually seen a fish get choked by a paper bag? You haven’t? Then STFU.

This is true. I am all for drill everywhere and drive a full size 89 Blazer. I am by no means an enviro wacko BUT we do need to pay more attention to the crap that we put in the oceans.

A 12 Gauge works wonders for those.

These things are great. I use them for cat box cleanup and powder room/den size trash bags.

What would they rather have me do, reuse these as trash bags or buy trash bags that will still be brought home in something disposable.

I think using them for what I do is pretty damn evironmentally friendly but I’m sure some nut will tell me how wrong I am.

I would like to urge the U.N. to take up the terrible task of addressing human elimination. Look, we might be able to tolerate urine for a while longer, but the BMs have got to stop.

I would urge the U.N. to stop first as an example to the rest of us.

In say six months, the rest of us could observe the success of the U.N. and decide to implement this world-wide or for-ged about it.

I, for one, actually LIKE paper. They fold well and fill my can like a can should be filled. In fact, while checking out at the self-checkout gizmos, I walk around and score all the paper bags I need.

Was that you behind me? So sorry. And I have coupons...

Legalize industrial hemp and make plastic from it. 100% biodegradable.
