KMart To Stop "Biodegradable" Claims

Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Discount retailer Kmart has agreed to stop advertising that paper products it sells are biodegradable.

The company is among three retailers charged by the Federal Trade Commission with making "false and unsubstantiated" claims about the environmental "greenness" of their products.

The charges were made public Tuesday by James Kohm, associate director of the enforcement division of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, in testimony before the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection.

Also charged were Tender Corp. and Dyna-E International.

Kohm said Tender also had agreed to stop making false claims about the biodegradable nature of its paper goods.

The FTC has not been able to reach an agreement with Dyna-E International. The charges will now go before an administrative judge.

According to an agency statement, products sold by the companies claimed to be biodegradable--Kmart's "American Fare" brand disposable plates, Tenders' "Fresh Bath" brand moist wipes and Dyna-E International's "Lightload" brand dry towels.

The FTC defines biodegradability as meaning "the entire product or package will completely decompose into elements found in nature within a reasonably short period of time after customary disposal."

Dyna-E was cited because most garbage is disposed of in landfills, which does not allow the company's towels to "completely break down and return to nature," according to FTC documents.

Oh, for the love of Pete! EVERYTHING is biodegradable! Even metal rusts away over time.

I hate to break it to the EnviroNazies, but even THEY will 'biodegrade' one day, LOL!

KMart CAVES! Dang!

So...I guess we can't use landfills any more now? Shall we just scatter trash on the streets to let it biodegrade there? LOL!

Dorks.

They should have seen my neighbor’s trash today—she was throwing out a lawn mower, some kind of shelves, and a vacuum. Wonder how long that will take to biodegrade?

Only tools buy products based on claims of “green” or “biodegradable” or whatever else the catchword of the day is. The spirit of P.T. Barnum is alive and well.

No, my friend. This is an invitation to dump your trash into the local fascist sierra club and EPA offices. Should the door be closed, throw the old refrigerator thru the window first and then dump the trash.

What time is it? It’s time for action! And don’t forget to toss in your old tires.

“And don’t forget to toss in your old tires.”

They can’t have my old tires. I use them in a stack to grow taters!

I have quite the stash of old car batteries. Hey! The Sierra Club could use them as door stops in their fancy uptown offices! ;)

In my state that only happens if you are flame broiled, otherwise you’re pumped full of preservatives and your coffin is encased in a concrete vault. We’ll have one heck of a zombie army one day.

That’s why I always eat food with a lot of preservatives. I figure it will cut the cost of my “final expenses”, right?

Fools. They should know the current operative sanctioned "green" term is recyclable.

“Discount retailer Kmart has agreed to stop advertising that paper products it sells are biodegradable”

Does this mean they will stop selling toilet paper?

How's that working out for you?

Is it April yet, or still late March, where you live?

At least my peas & spuds like the endless early spring.

I’m on my third tire ring, and the taters are growing so fast you can hear them grow!

Today will be the first sunny day out of about ten. It’s been rainy or overcast or both. Tomatoes and peppers are just sitting there, kind of whimpering, LOL! And the weeds? There’s no stopping them. Grrrrrr!

But sunshine and 80’s are ahead next week (or so they say) and then we’ll all be whining about the heat and humidity and the skeeters!

Sounds a lot like here. Hopefully, our the maters & peppers are making good roots, even if the tops are stalled.

Limas went in at what seemed a safe time, then we got hit with this retro-weather; less than half came up...and nobody locally has any seeds to replace them.

IF nothing croaks before the weekend, they’ll get some heat & light.

I’ve done my second hilling on the spuds; & I lucked into a dry enough day to till the weeds as they were just starting to get into full flower. I finished with the first drops coming back, and it hasn’t quits since...light, but fairly steady in an on & off & on again fashion.
