Just look how much weight Rosie O’Donnell has gained in the last decade.

They are equating Adaptation with Evolution.

From the standpoint of "the controversy" the biggest issue is: does one kind of animal give rise to another kind of animal? The adaptation seen in this population of guppies does not contribute to that debate.

Does anyone dispute “fast” change?

Still the same species and as far as we can tell NO NEW GENES or even methylation changes.

Guppies have frequently gone from the salubrious environment of a home fish tank with power pump, regular feeding, perfect temperature RIGHT INTO THE TOILET and down the sewer, and still survived.

So no predators and they grow larger since they eat more and grow... that is not evolution. After 10 years, they are still guppies.

Mutations happen; some of them improve their host’s life, some might be passed on to future generations. and some might lead to creation of new species.

Steve Jones, on page 170 of “Darwin’s Ghost,” writes: “DNA’s inability to copy itself without mistakes — mutation — means that evolution is inevitable.”

There is no reason why a sufficient number of adaptations like this couldn’t lead to speciation. It would take a long time to observe (except in the case of microbes) but its possible.

That is pretty fast change...

Especially since this story has been out there for about 10 years.

I know this because I cited one of these studies while writing a thesis proposal back in 1996 or 1997.

You could take these same two groups of guppies and reverse their environmental conditions and in the same amount of time see the exact same changes.

Their genome hasn’t changed, merely the expression of it due to environmental conditions.

You could in fact produce the exact same results in your own home aquarium set up. In the end you’d still just have guppies with the same old guppy genome.

“Evolution can occur in less than 10 years”

eah...just look at how your 401k has evolved.

That's not evolution, that's adaptation.

They are both still guppies, even of the same species, correct?

This is adaptation, not evolution. Somebody call me when the guppies turn into dogs.

It is not evolution. There is no new species here no even anything that leads to a new species. it is ADAPTATION. Happens all the time. When you don’t have predators the basic herd adapts this isn’t even new
