NOW Condemns Letterman
Atlantic ^ | Jun 12 2009, 9:50 am | by Chris Good

After this week's flap between Sarah Palin and David Letterman, which started when Letterman cracked a joke about Palin's "slutty flight attendant look" and another about her daughter getting "knocked up" by New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez, the National Organization of Women has condemned Letterman's jokes and is asking its supporters to write to CBS and voice criticism. "The sexualization of girls and women in the media is reaching new lows these days -- it is exploitative and has a negative effect on how all women and girls are perceived and how they view themselves," the group writes on its website, pointing to Letterman's jokes as an example. But, for NOW, it's not about politics: the group says conservatives have been just as guilty, over the years, of sexism. "NOW hopes that all the conservatives who are fired up about sexism in the media lately will join us in calling out sexism when it is directed at women who aren't professed conservatives," NOW writes. Despite Sarah Palin's ascendancy as a female vice presidential candidate, NOW did not support her. Far from it, in fact: NOW's political arm called Palin "a woman who opposes women's rights" and her nomination a sop to disappointed Hillary Clinton supporters.

It is exploding in Lechermann’s face. And rightly so. His remarks were beyond the pale. No children/youths should be subjected to such contempt.

But after listening to Lauer’s interview with Palin, I’d have to say he was fairly even-handed. He let her speak, and the only questionable remark on his part was insinuating her remarks about Lechermann were also tawdry. And she quite rightly put him down on that. Think of how it would have gone should Couric or some other left wing dolt handled the interview...

Sarah Palin may be seizing an “I paid for this microphone” issue. In reading the articles about this, she is kicking ass all over the media. David Letterman really stepped in it and Sarah Palin is more than willing to push him down in it and walk all over him! I am impressed.
Funny how the only republican with any balls in the last decade is female.

So true. Republicans need to take a cue from Sarah and do the same thing.

It took them a week to decide that Letterman wasn't important enough to protect. XXX-42 had their protection through all eight years and even after that. It's nice the National Association of Gals could jump on the train while the caboose was leaving the station.

Republicans need to take a cue from Sarah and do the same thing.

And over and over again every time it happens.

This is war.

“Your mother is a slut and I hope you get raped!” Ha ha ha ha that’s so funny...see how funny that is? Haven’t ya got a sense of humor?

No no I didn’t mean the 14 year old girl should get raped, I meant the 18 year old daughter should be raped.

As I said in my apology, “she has ready been knocked up, so it is OK to make rape jokes about her” Don’t you see? It’s just a little “rape the knocked up daughter” joke. It’s ok...it’s humor ha, ha, haaa, uuugh

Letterman should be fired and I will never watch him again in any venue.

“OK....when was the last time someone publicly ridiculed a Liberals daughter....maybe sombody can remind me?”

Chelsea Clinton was made fun of quite a bit. Not a proud time for conservatives.

"knocked up" by New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez

I am most curious. Has anyone sought a comment from Alex Rodriquez?

Letterman is rightfully and belatedly condemned by NOW for making a sick joke about Palin’s daughter, yet they supported a Bubba Clinton, a President whose position of power allowed him to take advantage of a 20 year old intern. If you look up the word ‘hypocrite’ in the dictionary, the National Organization of Women should be the first example they show.

Note that they saw this as an opportunity to take a shot at conservatives...
Can you imagine the discussions inside headquarters when they were figuring out what to say...
Not HER .. we can’t defend HER .. oh wait, what if we take a cheap shot at people who aen;t even involved in this story - yeah that’s it.

I don’t disagree with your overall take on Lauer. All I’m saying is that in this interview, he was more objective than usual. And I believe the intensity and point of the issue wasn’t lost on him. To Lechermann or someone of his ilk it would be. But Lauer seems to know how close he himself could come in stepping over the line should he take the usual liberal tack.

The same thing goes for NOW. Sure, they’re statement leaves a lot to be desired, but the simple fact they finally came to make one is itself news. And regardless of the behind-the-scenes wrangling in that decision, it hurts Lechermann and not them. This is bad news for Lechermann no matter how one takes it.

I, for one, am totally stunned that NOW would say anything about one of their lefty worm fellow travelers. Must be a new day somewhere...
