In what a U.S. military official calls an "inadvertent encounter," a Chinese submarine hit an underwater sonar array being towed by the destroyer USS John McCain on Thursday.

The array was damaged, but the sub and the ship did not collide, the official said. A sonar array is a radar towed behind a ship that listens and locates underwater sounds.

The incident occurred near Subic Bay off the coast of the Philippines.

Hell, as much as the US owes China, they’ll probably just write it off...

Always knew McCain was a ‘disaster’.

All kidding aside, tho, hope all the sailors are OK.

Gee, one would think that the destroyer would notice the sub shadowing them.

I guess the Chinese were just having cruise with the McCanin. Porbably going to have a BBQ with them later.

“did you hear something hit the sonar buoy?”

hmmmm... so that’s how sonar works.

The screw up is the Chinese sub driver NOT the destroyer. Somebody is going to find his pork fried in the rice

The array is on a very long cable that can be reeled in and out. Maybe they had some fun with the ChiCom sub?

Doubt that was the intention. Seems like sub collisions happen quite a bit. Sounds like China accidentally collided with our boat, which is probably better than the reverse.

Well there goes half of China's investment in that sub.

What do they do to the military in China when they mess up real bad anyway?

near Subic Bay off the coast of the Philippines
The sub then rapidly surfaced, the crew streamed out of the hatches, ran around the deck with their arms waving in the air, crawled back down the same hatches, battened down, and went back under.

Um...No. Sonar is not radar. Radar is electromagnetic - UHF and above. Sonar is acoustic - sound. A towed array is a passive system - basically a whole lot of very sensitive microphones on a long cable.

Doesn't anyone in the MSM take the time to properly research, write, and edit their "work product" anymore?
