This time the revolution will not be televised but it will be social networked. (Vanity)

Posted on 06/13/2009 10:54:28 PM PDT by PanzerKardinal

What maybe the Second Iranian Revolution illustrates the power of social networking sites like twitter, blogs, youtube and flickr.

They have completely superceded the MSM as the best source of information. In fact on twitter, CNN is being excoriated for it lack of coverage - #cnnfail

The Iranian government belatedly has realized the power of these sites and attempting to cut the internet, cellphones, and satellite dishes.

I'm stunned by the courage of some of these people who are trying to get inform people on what happening in iran.

Here's a list of some of what's available out there

http://twitter.com/Change_for_Iran - seems to be a student reporting from the middle of the protest

http://twitter.com/IranElection09 - giving a good overview of what's happening in Tehran

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2mRvMDZYto&feature=channel - ahriman46 is providing phone videos of the protests

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mousavi1388/sets/72157619592664479/show/ - mousavi1388 is uploading photo's taken at the various protest in Iran, most from cellphones.

http://tehranlive.org/ - Amir Sadeghi's blog has provided some of the best pictures coming out of this election.

Read some of the replies on youtube from Iranians.

They write things like, “Down with Arabs” “No more desert religion. Persian culture and freedom.”

It’s shocking because I tend to think of the Islamic world as a monolith.

It seems at least the young people want no part in militant islam. They just want to get on with their lives.

From Iran sent 10:15 AM sunday june 3 Tehran-time I was just on the phone with my dad… he’s in the persian rug business in Tehran (Bazaar)… he said everything’s really come down there and on his way to Bazaar, but places like Khiyaban Vali Asr and Vanak are pretty chaotic…my cousin there was beaten pretty bad with a baton… seems like it’s getting very violent…

This is not a vanity post, this is a mega barf post. Iran already has cut communications with the outside world off just as North Korea has. Most people live in fear about opposing the powers to be in Iran. You have to wonder how many people just turn up missing every day and are never seen again. The dictatorship in Iran is just like Iraq’s under Saddam Hussein. Complaining about western news agencies to include CNN as problems is total bull.

If the GOP wasn't so ossified, it would realize that this technology would work for them too. The Dems have figured this out and Obama is allegedly president today. Nobody over 40 should be in GOP leadership...

We feel your pain. We also have the same problem with CNN on this side of the pond!

This hit my eye immediately.

Interesting quote from Totten’s blog:

“Video below shows a human wave of demonstrators chasing frightened police officers.”

Now would be the time for those sources outside of Iran to help those inside Iran to help them achieve freedom now.
Now would be a good time for Israel to take out those nuke sights in Iran since the Tehran government is in chaos now.

I think Israel needs to wait. If they act now, the government will tell the people they need to rally around Ahmadinnerjacket and be happy he was "elected," in order to fight off the evil Zionists. It will come out that 'allah' told the mullahs Ahmadinnerjacket was the correct choice.

If the Israelis keep a close eye on events (and watch for Iran to pull a Reichstag fire) and let them run their course, they can allow the Iranian people to undermine the regime. And, if the "moderate" comes out on top, maybe get him to stand down. If not, they are in no worse shape than they are now..... except the only way for Ahmadinnerjacket to come out on top is to brutalize the opposition, which the Israelis can use to their advantage later.

I’ve been following Change_for_Iran all evening on twitter. He has said that wireless phones are out, and internet speed is very slow - I’ve wondered if he isn’t on a satellite connection going around the state wireless.

It’s shocking because I tend to think of the Islamic world as a monolith.

Ever heard of Sunni and Shi'a? They are Islamic, and have been killing each other, most visibly recently in Iraq, where both sects are Arab. Iraqi Shi'a tribes have been severely opressed under Saddam.

Iranian Muslims are mostly Shi'a (minority of Islamic world) and Iranians are Persians, not Arabs and there is no love lost between them.

It’s not shocking at all.

First of all the islamic world was never monolithic and is today less than ever. Just look at the countless inter-muslim wars. Also the ethnic divide between Turks, Iranians and Arabs contribute to the separations. Not to forget the Shia-Sunni split, and the secular-religious division.

Most educated, middle upper class Persians, the urban youth and intellectuals despise the arabification of their culture, and anti-islamism and anti-arabism have become core parts of the view of many many Iranians during the 50+ years of Pahlavi monarchy, which emphasized pre-islamic Iranian culture.

Patriotic, nationalist, pro-Western Iranians hate islam/arabism with a passion. They prefer secularism or Zoroastrianism or Bahaism as genuine Iranian faiths.
There are also many underground Evangelicals.
