Reverberations as Door Slams on Hope of Change

By BILL KELLER

TEHRAN — It is impossible to know for sure how much the ostensible re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad represents the preference of an essentially conservative Iranian public and how much, as opposition voters passionately believe, it is the imposed verdict of a fundamentally authoritarian regime.

But for those who dreamed of a gentler Iran, Saturday was a day of smoldering anger, crushed hopes and punctured illusions, from the streets of Tehran to the policy centers of Western capitals.

Iranians who hoped for a bit more freedom, a better managed economy and a less reviled image in the world wavered between protest and despair on Saturday.

On the streets around Fatemi Square, near the headquarters of the leading opposition candidate, Mir Hussein Moussavi, riot police officers dressed in RoboCop gear roared down the sidewalks on motorcycles to disperse and intimidate the clots of pedestrians who had gathered to share rumors and dismay.

Both Iran and N. Korea are going for broke. This increases the chance of Israel turning Tehran into glass parking lot.

I figured that Iranian regime somehow find a way to get Ahmadinejad reelected.

President Obama confronted evil with words.

True evil can NEVER be defeated with words.

Liberals believe....but reality is.

I would think that obama's waffling on iranian nuclear power and israel bashing has killed most of the wind that would have been in the sails of the protest movement.

if george bush's steady hand was still steering iranian foreign policy, it would be clear to them that the whack job goes, or conflict with the US is ultimately unavoidable.

>>Both Iran and N. Korea are going for broke.<<

So predictable that even Joe got this one right.

"Mark my words," the Democratic vice presidential nominee warned at the second of his two Seattle fundraisers Sunday. "It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama ...

President Obama confronted evil with words.

You sure? I never heard anything remotely resembling , "Mr. Gobachev, tear down this wall."

“We are excited to see what appears to be a robust debate taking place in Iran,” Obama told reporters when asked about the Iranian election during an event at the White House.

“Whoever ends up winning the election in Iran, the fact there has been a robust debate hopefully will advance our ability to engage them in new ways,” he said.

The character of the words are irrelevant to liberals. Reagan was a war-monger according to them, but when he spoke strongly, it was backed up with action.

Obama and liberals think soothing words with no backup can save us from evil.

NYT lies.

The optimists in Iran and abroad have to ask themselves whether the joyful ruckus that filled the streets represented a new popular force or just an opportunity to let off steam.

"Joyful Ruckus"?? Not even! The thousands of protestors had the police on the run...

BO should have kept his mouth shut instead of claiming his one speech paved the way for “change” in Iran. By taking credit (albeit falsely) for the election before the votes were even counted, BO left the mullahs with no choice.

They had to reinstate Ahmadamnnutjob or give victory to the United States.

BO’s once again proven what a lightweight he is in the arena of geopolitics.

Actually, Reagan used words as well. They just weren’t words like “peace in our time” and Obama’s b***s***.

President Obama confronted evil with words.

While I very much agree with the use of the word "evil," there was no confrontation, it was an enabling event.

Bill Keller - idiot NYT editor now reporting from Iran. Guess he needs to get out of the frying pan and into the fire. I wonder if Obama would pay Iran to keep Keller just like he paid Palau to take the Guantamo terrorists.
