BBC says election broadcasts disrupted from Iran

The BBC said Sunday that the satellites it uses to broadcast in Persian were being jammed from Iran, disrupting its reports on the hotly-disputed presidential election.

The corporation said television and radio services had been affected from 1245 GMT Friday onwards by "heavy electronic jamming" which had become "progressively worse".

Satellite technicians had traced the interference to Iran, it said.

The satellites its uses in the Middle East to broadcast BBC Persian television to Iran were being affected, meaning that audiences in Iran, the Middle East and Europe would likely experience disruption.

BBC Arabic television and other language services had also experienced transmission problems, the corporation said.

"Any attempt to block BBC Persian television is wrong and against international treaties on satellite communication. Whoever is attempting the blocking should stop it now," said BBC World Service director Peter Horrocks.

"It seems to be part of a pattern of behaviour by the Iranian authorities to limit the reporting of the aftermath of the disputed election.

Technically, they are jamming the ground stations......not the satellite, I believe.

Since satellite technicians know the jamming is coming from Iran, the Iranians are probably jamming the uplink signal. They’ve done this before from Cuba against US-based Persian satellite channels.

Kind of ironic, coming from a government-supported news network.

This tells me that things are worse in Iran than people are letting on. Lots of people are going to die in the next few days. Good let them kill each other—they are getting the government they deserve.

Shame the BBC dumped all their HF outlets.

Hard to jam all the HF broadcast spectrum.

Tho the Chinese try from time to time.

Yes it is.

Money to operate is generated via a license fee to all TV users. The fee is set by government.

If something is mandated by law, it is by definition controlled by government. You can dress it up any way you want, but it is still a pig.

It is government controlled media.

Period.

If something is mandated by law, it is by definition controlled by government.

A curious concept, if you will allow me to say so. In the British system, statute law is controlled by Parliament, not government: while common law has nothing to do with either. If the BBC is 'controlled' by government, then government is pretty lousy at 'controlling', since the government of the day (of whichever party) is freely and frequently attacked on the BBC. State-controlled media do not, as a rule, attack their governments for going to war, as the BBC so blatantly did at the time of the invasion of Iraq. Successive governments over the years, fearful or resentful of this lack of 'control', have attempted, with limited success, to impose limits on the BBC's freedom by modification of the terms of the Royal Charter: most recently in the replacement of the Corporation's Governors by the BBC Trust after the Kelly affair.

Incidentally, the only direct financial support the BBC receives from Government is a small Foreign Office grant to the (radio) World Service.
