The agency does have its internal problems, like any other, but this article is grossly unfair and mischaracterizes its mission and its role with the tribes. The Indians are not obligated to stay with IHS, but have the option of either contractor or compacting for their own services.
Quite frankly, most of the tribes would have died off a long time ago from tuberculosis and other nasty Third World diseases if it were not for IHS.
I volunteer sometimes for a dental clinic for Native Americans in the seediest part of a major city on the USA’s west coast. And EVERY time they do outreach, this one group of commies has a table set-up there, making very, very sure that EVERY Mexican who wanders in that places is signed up for EVERY possible benefit that’s available in this liberal city.
And they get LOTS of takers.
