McCartney and Yoko push 'meat-free Mondays'

LONDON (AFP) — Beatles legend and famous vegetarian Paul McCartney was joined by John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono Monday to launch an appeal for "meat-free Mondays."

McCartney said going vegetarian, even for just one day a week, was good for the environment because of research suggesting it cuts greenhouse gas emissions from the world's livestock population.

"I thought this was a great idea. To just reduce your meat intake maybe by one day a week and this would seriously benefit the planet," he told reporters, alongside Ono and a bevy of other stars including Kelly Osbourne and Moby.

Lennon's widow -- famously blamed for splitting up the Beatles, but clearly reconciled and on good terms with McCartney now -- added: "Give up one day and then it will be two days maybe. It's a very, very intelligent idea."

In a video on his website, McCartney noted that the campaign had already been launched in the United States and Australia.

"It?s kind of easy to do. You?ve had too much over the weekend anyway and you?re all running down to the gym to try and work it off so just have a meat-free Monday," he said.

She killed his band, killed his partner, and now he's shacking up with her?

Yoko had set her eyes on Paul long before he shrugged her off on John.

Maybe I'm amazed.

With Obama spending our money like it was his, we may soon have more then one day a week without meat … mayhap days without food. ;-)

Does shoe leather count as meat?

When Paul was married to Linda, he had to be weaned off of meat (smaller portions every meal until it was “gone” from the plate).

Also he’d still sneak out now and again for his favorite meal, steak and eggs.

It isn’t about health, it’s about “animal rights”.

Animals don’t recognize the rights of other animals to “exist” when they are hungry. Cats will taunt roaches for play, they aren’t even doing it to trap “food”.

Why push fake processed substitute foods?

It’s as ridiculous to make a tofu turkey as it is to make a tomato out of steak.

Oh yeah, and I'm rooting for Ringo to be the last surviving Beetle.

Who's older? Richard Starkey (Ringo Starr) or Pete Best?

I think Pete's been living on the family farm, not globe trotting.

It serve the band right for Pete to outlast the lot of them.

It is basic denial of what one is.

Do they condemn the lion for what it is?
