KOROR, Palau (AP) — A group of Guantanamo detainees expected to be resettled in Palau may not want to move to the remote Pacific nation, a Palauan official said Wednesday.

Last weekend, Palau sent a fact-finding team to the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba to meet with the 13 Uighurs — Turkic Muslims from China's far western Xinjiang region — and assess their needs.

Sending them back to China was not an option because of U.S. concerns that Chinese authorities, who consider them separatists, would immediately arrest the men.

A Chinese prison would make Gitmo look like Disneyland in comparison.

I know it's probably just me but every time I hear this group mentioned on the radio they pronounce "Uighurs" like "wiggers" and I always picture this guy:

So what’s to prevent a few Chinese “tourists” from visiting Palau in a few years and abducting the weegers?

Not a posh enough resort island for them? I was struck with the pix of the Uighurs in Bermuda how well fed they look. They certainly were not being starved at Club Gitmo!

Let me get this straight. All I have to do is hint I might be a radical Islamic dude...from China....sit down at Gitmo for three years, then I get a free ticket and a new life in the South Pacific...on some island....compliments of the US government? And I might even get a cash package with this?

Sign me up.

The prisoners probably feel they would be too close to China and fear they would be captured.

Sending them back to China would be so much cheaper to us all. Now they, who btw, were training for jihad, will live off of our tax dollars and be celebrities just like we are seeing in Bermuda.

In order to release them, some other country must agree to take them. No one wants them.. so we're now resorting to bribing small island nations into accepting them.

Find an old Jap tunnel on Pelilieu and make them live there. Maybe the smell of burning flesh and napalm still permeates the place. Enjoy.

If I came out as a dangerously radical fundamentalist Christian whacko, I wonder if that might get me as far as Catalina Island?

And for the coup-de-grace, la piece de resistance, I don’t believe in Global Warming. That by itself ought to get me an atoll somewhere.

Yes, I know. I was just noting how the pronunciation sounds to me like “wiggers” and then Vanilla Ice pops into my mind.

Uighurs is pronounced “weegurs.” Shouldn’t it be “usgurs” when they are the object of the verb or of a preposition?

Wow, we have to pay Palau 200 million to take care of terrorists?

Obambi made a deal with the island country of Palau to take the Uighur terrorists... For $12 million each.

Obama will pay $200 million to Palau to take some or all of the 17 Uighur terrorists held at Gitmo.
That’s $12 million per Uighur at least.

Obama had wanted to release the Uighurs who trained in Tora Bora with Al-Qaeda for some time now.

GDP (PPP) 2006 estimate
- Total $157.7 million

and we are giving them 200 million. Ha. Like 130 percent of their entire GDP!
