When his first wife changed the relationship status on her Myspace.com page from "married" to "divorced," Joshua Wilkinson thought he was free from the bonds of matrimony.
After all, the father of five had purchased a do-it-yourself divorce kit from his mother for $250, and filled out all the paperwork.
It wasn't until he married another woman that Wilkinson, 29, realized that he was still married to his first wife. That explains, he said, how he wound up being indicted on bigamy charges earlier this month by a Taylor County grand jury.
Seems that when he and his first wife filled out paperwork for the divorce together, she told him she would file it and that it would be final 60 days from then, said Wilkinson, his thin face barely visible from behind a small, dirty visitation window at the Taylor County Jail.
Then after 60 days had passed, Wilkinson said, the woman began telling her friends she was divorced, and "Her MySpace said, 'Divorced,' (she) said she filed ... I honestly thought I was divorced."
Not long afterward, he met someone else and fell "deeply in love," he said.
The two married, despite warnings from Wilkinson's family that his divorce may not have gone through, said Donna Verner, Wilkinson's mother.
"He's not the brightest light," Verner said. "He insisted he was (divorced) because he'd been served (with papers) but that was when she filed on him."
After learning he was married to both women, Wilkinson said he divorced his first wife. Alas, the second shot at love ended with sexual assault charges being filed against him. The grand jury also indicted him on that charge.
Wilkinson now sits at the Taylor County Jail in lieu of bonds totaling $154,000.
Verner said her son has been on "lock down" at the jail this month after he was caught trying to make beer out of pancake syrup.
"He's not real bright, but he has a heart of gold," she said. "He's so distraught over his children."
I’d like to hear a little more about the pancake syrup/beer thing.
So true. That said, he is as eligible to craft his “Definition” of marriage as anyone. Why is he locked up for Pete's sake.

I can just picture young guys across America using the same logic.
They will be going to Myspace and clicking “married” and putting a spouse name of some beautiful famous actress.
They will think that makes it official!
Well, if he lived in Saudi Arabia, all he’d have to do is post the phrase “I divorce you” three times and he would have been scot free.
Simple resolution. Convert to islam.
