Men-only train cars sought in groping fears

Many women taking the crowded train in Tokyo opt for women-only carriages during the rush hour to avoid gropers.

Now, for fear of being accused of groping, some are asking for carriages reserved for men as well.

Ten shareholders of Seibu Holdings, which runs trains in the Tokyo area, have petitioned for carriages reserved for men.

"There have been many cases of groping, as well as false charges of groping, on Seibu Railway," the shareholders said in a notice seeking a vote at the company's annual meeting next Wednesday.

"While measures against groping, such as setting women-only carriages, have been effective to a certain extent, no measures have been taken against false charges of groping... In the spirit of gender-equality, a male-only carriage must be introduced."

I have never understood why groping women on the subway seems to be so prevalent in Japan, far more so than anywhere else.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Perhaps historically women had even less power than in the west.

I think they also have women-only cars in India for the same reason.

Yes . I have lived in Japan for almost 24 years . A lot of Japanese men are sexual perverts or “ tsukebe “ which would mean “ wolf “

IIRC there were women-only cars in America in the 1920’s

Interesting. I ride the NYC subways, which are often as packed as cattle cars, and I’ve never seen nor heard of groping incidents, though I guess they must occasionally occur.

It may have something to do with the fact that the subway cars at rush hour are so crowded that people are literally packed in like sardines. The opportunity constantly presents itself. And its not only women that get groped.

Thankfully, no. I’ve never seen that in New York.

I actually only ride the NYC subways occasionally. I live in NJ and mainly ride the Path into the city, which is about 50 times better than the NYC subway system.

If the NYC subway ever gets like the Tokyo subway, I’ll just never use it. If the Path gets that way, I’ll switch to riding the bus system, which isn’t bad.

But no. I would never subject myself to a situation like the one pictured in that video and in fact I often wait for the next train if the train in front of me is heavily crowded.

Hentai would be a better description.

Hentai would be a better description.
Hentai is the Less aggressive term (meaning, more or less, Sexual or Fetish).. Tsukebe is the rough translation of pervert.

“A lot of Japanese men are sexual perverts or “ tsukebe “ which would mean “ wolf “”

From all the strange stories I’ve read from Japan, I would have to agree.

If sardines were packed like Japanese trains, you would get a can of sardine paste.

I recall one incident when I was on a crowded train from Sagami Otska to Yokosuka. A worried looking Japanese woman kept looking at me. I couldn't figure out why until she spoke to me: "Do ya'll know where the Yokohama (USN dependent) housing area is?" She was no more Japanese than I am, spoke even less of the language and was thoroughly lost.

I ride the DC Metro pretty often and I just assume that if a man tried to grope a woman there, he’s putting his life in danger.
