'No Comment' Is Not an Option
The Washington Post ^ | 6/19/09 | Paul Wolfowitz

President Obama's first response to the protests in Iran was silence, followed by a cautious, almost neutral stance designed to avoid "meddling" in Iranian affairs. I am reminded of Ronald Reagan's initially neutral response to the crisis following the Philippine election of 1986, and of George H.W. Bush's initially neutral response to the attempted coup against Mikhail Gorbachev in 1991. Both Reagan and Bush were able to abandon their mistaken neutrality in time to make a difference. It's not too late for Obama to do the same.

Paul Wolfowitz on the op-ed page of the WaPo? What's the world coming to?

Obviously, even liberals are being torn apart by Obama's refusal to publicly support the Iranian people's struggle for freedom against the tyrannical mullocracy.

The fact that Obama didn't immediately come out in support of the Iranian people speaks volumes about his lack of a moral center, and his utter bankruptcy of understanding about the concepts of individual freedom and liberty.

He is completely unfit to be the president of a free people. In fact, he's unfit to be a president of any kind.

I fear that the reason the he does not take a stand against the tyranny is that one day, soon, he may be confronted with those words when he uses similar tyranny against protesters here.

You may have a point there, but that would assume that Obama can actually think and extrapolate major events of this magnitude out into the future.

I'm convinced that he can't.

My impression of the audience’s reaction is the same as yours.

Most of what I saw, which I think was most all of his total presentation, did not seem well received. What laughter I heard was, with a couple of exceptions, mostly nervous sounding laughter and very little of it.

The whole situation seemed awkward, as well it should. Had I been there, I’d have heckled him with the question, “Who wrote your material, Hussein? David Letterman?”

He was actually bragging about himself and how the press kisses his ass, and talking about a TV show about the compelling story of the man in the White House, or words to that effect.

Despicable, creepy and evil.

And yes, I agree with you that it was a successful evening for us.

You may have a point there. However, narcissists are very intelligent, and clever, and sometimes when acting in their own interest a longer range plan is developed rather than immediate gratification. His history of being on the fence with issues indicates to me that he is watching and waiting for his time to strike - to use crises for his own benefit.

Bumping your EVERY word, chops. And YES on the frugally sprinkled nervous laughter.

I think you are spot-on on everything.

I have heard a few American Iranians on Fox/elsewhere applaud O for staying out of it.

They seem to think that USA’s support for the protestors will muddy the waters for them.
