Iraq's leader declared victory Saturday as the country began to end a foreign occupation with the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from cities, and told Iraqis not to lose faith if the pullback resulted in attacks.
As part of a security pact signed between Baghdad and Washington last year, U.S. combat forces must leave urban centers by June 30 and the entire force that invaded Iraq in 2003 must be gone by 2012.
"It is a great victory for Iraqis that we are taking the first step toward ending the foreign presence in Iraq," Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki told a conference of leaders from the ethnic Turkmen community.
"I, and you, are sure that many don't want us to succeed and celebrate this victory. They are getting themselves ready to move in the dark to destabilize the situation, but we will be ready for them, God willing."
A series of devastating bomb attacks in April cast doubt on the ability of Iraqi security forces to take over from U.S. troops in protecting the population from mainly Sunni Islamist insurgents, including al Qaeda, and other violent groups.

From the tone of the first two sentences, it doesn’t look as though the reporter would have included the comment if it exists.
Iraq is doomed to failure. They still have the same radical mindset that gave the Saddam in the first place, ‘it is all those damn Americans falut’. And of course, Obama and the libs are just feeding that mindset.
It’s what we do, we fight and die for ungrateful pricks. But yes, a simple thank you would definitely be nice, and wouldn’t detract from the political clout he is trying to build.
Like the Shaw, the puppet secular leaders now in charge are corrupt and have no moral convictions. They will flee like rats from a fire when the Mullahs force a takeover. And they will take it without a shot fired, because Emperor Maobama won't “interfere” with their affairs.

We all know that this withdrawal is based on President Bush’s agreement....right?? Because in a short while, we will hear Obama say....”I did it!!”
The Muslim need to feign superiority in any and every situation might well bring about the collapse into chaos of that US created government. Nothing can be assumed about that place until US control and influence has been absent for period of time.
When the Islamic “government” of Iraq can call the exit of American forces a victory of liberation from occupying forces — it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling we have been fools once again...

Khomenist clerics (prominent in the Iranian Regime) have a different mindset than the Al-Sistani Shi’ites (prominent in Iraq). The latter prefer a separation between Mosque and State while the former are proponents of Theocracy.
Also, Al Nouriki is a common cheesy politician (like we have here). He wants to pre-empt the Al Sadr folks with this apparently ungrateful attitude. (His words in private may be very different). I see him as expressing Iraqi nationalism - something they desperately need at this point in their history.
Your’e right, the foreign presence thing is for local consumption politically. However, there has not been much in the thank you department.
Unfortunately the 700 year occupation of Spain has had similar effects on Hispanic peoples. The republican and legal ideas of Rome and the concepts of individual liberty of the Visigoths were washed away by the Conquista and never really revived by the Reconquista. I'd say success in Iraq is still very problematic.
Our troops have shed their blood for your freedom. You and yours were oppressed under Saddam and you know it.
Many of your countrymen have expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the sacrifices that our own people have made for your nation.
The least you could do is set a better example than the one you're setting now.

It will be a great day when U.S. Forces can totally withdraw from Iraq leaving a stable democracy behind. I just hope that Iraq can keep it.
