Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s immigration circus got another ring Friday with Al Sharpton’s visit to Phoenix.
The hard-line sheriff and the controversial civil-rights advocate, who has been a vocal critic of Arpaio’s immigration policies, met Friday afternoon in downtown Phoenix.
The meeting resulted in protestors from both sides showing up at the Wells Fargo office complex in downtown Phoenix, site of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, where he and Sharpton were meeting. Phoenix police set up buffer zones to separate dozens of anti- and pro-Arpaio protestors.
Arpaio protestors include those contending his immigration and crime sweeps unfairly target Hispanics. Some of the Arpaio supporters called for the deportation of illegal immigrants, and at least one was armed.
The MCSO has raided businesses it believes hire illegals and has arrested illegal immigrants congregating at day labor sites in the Phoenix area.
Arpaio said earlier this week he was disturbed by charges from some of his critics that he is a “fascist” and a “neo-Nazi.” Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and the Phoenix New Times have brought up the fact that some active supporters of Arpaio’s immigration polices have links to neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups.
A recent New Times story shows protestors at a pro-Arpaio rally shaking hands and getting their pictures taken with the sheriff, then later giving Nazi salutes.
Arpaio told the Phoenix Business Journal earlier this week that he denounces those types of groups and has his picture taken with all kinds of people, and he can’t perform background checks on them.
The MCSO is under investigation by the federal government over whether its immigration raids and crime sweeps unfairly target Hispanics.
Gerry Nance June 20, 2009 1:01PM EST Aliens have a lawful avenue and process to enter the USA. The process is designed to limit access on the basis of health, wealth, education, and crimnal history. I cannot go to Thailand, unless I have a monthly income over $2,000. Is that unfair ? No, it's their immigration policy. Do I go into Thailand as an illegal alien, anyway? No, because I respect their laws. If I was in Thailand as an illegal alien, would I march in their streets, with a USA flag and demand amnesty? Would I demand they grant me their civil rights? No, that would be stupid. If I want civil right, then where should I fight for them? In the nation of my citizenship.
Gerry Nance June 20, 2009 12:35PM EST I support Sheriff Arpaio, and any LEO/LEA enforcin state or federal immigration laws. I happen to have been born into this world as a white, male, blessed withe nationalitu of the USA, and I welcome anyone asking me about my natiality and immigration status. The way to avoid racial profiling -- btw -not a crime -- is to video encounters with people and random sample groups, recording questioning of all races, not only focusing on one race.

The Mexicans are not any ones slaves. They come here willingly to work so they can feed their families and have a better life! They have done this for many years. I have worked with many of these "slaves" and I doubt they would say they view themselves as such!
Joe should enforce the laws! PLain and simple! However, if we don't like him doing that then get the (expletive) law changed! Don't bitch him out for doing what he is sworn to do!
I have lived here since 1957. The Illegal problem has always been there. I say give them a legal way to enter and leave this country easily and with out fear of arrest and deportation. If they want citizenship then after they attain the proper documentation then they can become one!
Treating hard working Mexican laborers as criminals is not the proper way to handle this. I say change the law. Not bitch at Joe!

Sort of what law enforcement is supposed to do. Newspapers getting it wrong maybe what is erroding their circulation and relevance.

Back in the sixties the government came into the schools and brainwashed us with the idea we needed to control the population because it was rising so fast. They said the roads would become crowded and we would run out of things like water.
They unleashed abortions, birth control pills, and other forms of Family Planning.
To allow the country to be over run with the criminals in businesses illegal labor while the criminals in the government aid and abet the invasion is a travesty against mankind.
They have seen to it our children were killed to control the population at the same time allowing the world to export their population problems here.
What about our sacrifices, many made against our will?
P.S. We still haven't recovered from the last time the criminals in business were allowed to bring in their slaves.
Paul Carpenter June 19, 2009 7:56PM EST Aftab is out of touch with the concept of laws in Arizona and the Federal government.If he can pick the laws he thinks are ok then we should as well but we arn't free to do so, and I don't know why he thinks he can.The illegals invade our hospitals and work areas and deprive us of the rightful and exspect medical help when we need it for our families and opportunities for work in our own country.Larry and Joan have a good prospective on the subject as well. The illegals present a real danger in our state and accross the country for simple reason that most people don't understand their language or accept their culture.Language and culture are very important to us because we learn how to treat others in our culture and they know how to treats us as well. We can tell when we are wronged by others from other cultures. Disrepecting our laws is just one of the issues that we are tired of putting up with. We have been patient with our government for years. We are not going to be patient like we have in the past because they lied to us about the true impact of illegals in our state as well as around the country. We are mad as hell and we are not going to put up with it any more. We are the citizens of Arizona and we are tired of your lies.We have a Constitution and laws that we expect people to honor and when they don't they don't deserve our honor or help or consideration about anything now or in the future until they show us the Citizens of Arizona that they respect our laws and our interest as a country.I love this country but more important then that I love what this country stands for.But even more than that I love the documents that was created by our founding fathers in 1776 and on.They have served us well for 200 years. And we intend on protecting it and fight for it if necessary. Sherrif Joe does that for us and has our full support and we look forward to the other law inforcement agencies doing the same soon!

As for targeting Hispanics -what profoundly stupid observation - there are so damn many of them they are hard to miss ...what is missing here is WHY they are leaving their native country which they love - LOVE - a human rights commission should be convened on the other side of the border ... unless of course their presence here is politically advantageous for one group or another ... which smells of racism and bigotry in another direction - the illegals once again used as a pawn by their "brothers"

Illegal aliens, while mostly hard working, good people fleeing a lack of economic opportunity and corruption in their home countries, bring with themselves vast needs for public services we can not afford to provide (just look at the budget debacle) and a small minority of hardened criminals that hides among those that just want to work. Only Joe is willing to take on those who call him a racist and uphold the law. How much worse off would AZ be if we didn't have Joe? I think much worse off.

Sheriff Arpaio's sweeps have been investigated ad nauseum and not found illegal. These people are not treated disrespectful, but they are breaking the law!!! Just because most of the illegals here in Arizona are Hispanic I can guarantee you that if we had an influx of red haired irish illegals they would all be going to tent city. For if one person's rights are violated, rights of all are compromised, irrespective of the rationale given. Sherrif Arpaio should seriously consider resigning, because he apparently presumes guilt before due process. If we as a community and society do not respect the basic premises of the law, what does it say about us.
