THE near-derelict block of land hardly gets a glance as a parade of tourists trek past in Bali's party precinct on JL Legian in Kuta.
But amid the clubs and bars doing a brisk trade, a storm is erupting over the 800sqm on which the former Sari Club stood.
The desolate site, considered hallowed ground by Australians, is opposite Bali's memorial monument listing the victims of the October 2002 terrorist attack, including those killed at the nearby Paddy's Bar, which has been redeveloped. The bombs claimed 202 lives, including 88 Australians.
The Sari Club site, earmarked for a peace park and museum, has drawn little attention since the bombings, until recently.
A quasi-parking lot for motor bikes, the land has been a hive of activity for much of the past two weeks. Construction workers have erected a site shed and corrugated iron fences, and paved the entrance. A large generator faces the back wall. A sign declaring that building is not permitted has been removed.
The community and government authorities are abuzz, saying wealthy Balinese businessman Kadek Wiranatha, who owns many nightclubs and restaurants in the district, including Paddy's Bar, has bought a 15-year lease on the site from the Jakarta landowner Sukanto Cia.
While Mr Cia would not comment, sources said his brother-in-law, Hadi, confirmed that Mr Kadek had bought the lease.
Local officials do not deny Mr Kadek's plan, but they say he has no building permit, leaving a window for the local government authorities to stop the project.

The Islamic extremists who bombed the nightclub chose it as a target because it was a 'decadant' nightclub where men and women dared to gather together, dance and have fun. Some sort of memorial at or near the site is appropriate, but converting the site into a sad little 'peace' museum where a handful of people shuffle through gives the gives the terrorists exactly what they want. A Briton chieftan once said of the Romans: "Where they make a desert, they call it 'peace'". A genuine way to honor the innocent victims of Islamic facsism is to build a nightclub that is bigger and better, where crowds of people will continue to gather to enjoy life and celebrate freedom in spite of the forces of death and evil.
The same goes for the World Trade Center redevelopment. A memorial should be part of it, but it should be a vibrant place bustling with people engaging in all the busy activities of life.
Strip Club
why does there have to be a “peace and love museum” wherever Muslim fanatics commit mass murder. I hate what they’re doing with the WTC site. Build it exactly as it was, except with a big statue of a pig with the head of Mohammed. show those fockers they cannot win.
Most Aussies I know would appreciate a restaurant, rowdy bar and club as a memorial.
