Researchers found that Americans had better memories, were quicker witted and were generally smarter than their English counterparts. And the older the pensioner, the greater the difference, claimed researchers.
The gap was so wide that a 75-year-old American had a similar brain to a 65-year-old Englishman, the tests proved.

How about having been born into a nation that was fighting for its very survival, with severe food rationing (that didn’t end completely until 1954), substandard housing in many areas (because of Luftwaffe induced redevelopment) and a very large number of absent fathers in their early lives.
I wasn’t aware that we had pensioners in the US :-)

Apropos of nothing, here’s a cute story. I just turned sixty, which qualified me for a discount at the golf course where I play in a Tuesday after-work 9-hole league. When I went to the counter to pay I announced, “[company] league ... senior ... pull cart”. Now there was a younger fellow ringing me up and a guy more my age behind the counter. Cognizant of the mental effort I had made to formulate my announcement I quipped, “That’s a lot to remember at my age.” The young fellow was mute, but the other guy responded, “Oh stop! Just stop it!” ... I’m still chuckling.
All the quick-witted ones left 300 years ago.

That, and Englishmen just don't care anymore, and such have let their minds go lax. We're heading in the same direction.
I wonder sometimes if that's not the actual explanation for much of what's incomprehensible about the Old World. Did Europe's best and brightest flee and take their DNA with them?
The number of emigrants was small, so they wouldn’t really account for any theoretical dimunition of the gene pool. However, if they were selected from the cream of the crop, they would account for a relative advantage in native intelligence, industry, etc. compared to the average which remained in the Old World.
Socialism dumbs down the masses.
Strange, Russia and Germany were in a worse state of being due to the war. Now while I can’t speak much for Germany (never been there) I can say that Russians (been there many times) are a far more exciting people than the British.
Both Adam Smith and Charles Darwin took note of this in their writings.
