"Bloody colonials, what with your bleedin' high I.Q.s, your American football, your guns, and Sarah Palin. "
Meh . . . you Colonials will forever have our DNA & bloodlines in there somewhere, even if your dental care has evolved! :)
U.K. television is so bad that people just can’t stand the thought of retiring and being forced to watch more of it.
I blame the tea.
ha ha...
I believe, it is because the English watch soccer.
They were selected from the misfits who couldnt make a living, and from the criminal classes (australia).
No, its more likely because they watch cricket.
and play rugby.
Eddie Izzard is accidentally sexy!
Healthcare ...
Something like 1/3 of US draftees were unfit for military service( mostly due to malnutrition ) in the US. In the late 1930’s there was, basically, no Social Security, no subsidized housing, no organized welfare, medical care of any kind save family and Churches. So, poverty of a type existed quite commonly in the US.
However, the US didn’t have English type welfare ‘schemes’ until into the 60’s. England had them, in the 20’s, at least.
I’ve noticed when I’ve been to Europe ( 10+ times ) a somnolence, a lack of energy. I could describe it as more organized, civilized, planned, routine, slightly suffocating. As pleasant as Europe is, it seems as if everyone is on a little Prozac.
I notice as soon as I get back to a US airport, the energy the energy in the airport. People walk faster, more pushing/shoving, people seem to be in a hurry, in general a more energetic and stimulating environment.
Another thing I noticed talking to working class is their lack of disposable income. They were all very pinched with high taxes and the cost of living, leaving them very cash short. Where as an American working class would have a car and a boat, or motor cycle. Not so much for a EU worker.
It is easier, and cheaper to get out and do something. Golf, beaches, gun clubs, hunting, sailing, boating, hiking, horse riding, are all readily available. People have yards to mow, they own their houses which have to be kept up. Libraries and very low cost community collages are full of senior citizens.
The weather is either very pleasant( California, Florida ), moderate, or challenging. Some of the oldest Americans are of Nordic decent, living in the Northern Plains which have near Soviet style winters.
I just think living in the US is more stimulating.
Any large public housing slum. Listless people, dumb as dirt, not a book in the whole building. No need to be active, and after a generation or so, no remembrance to be active. This type of ‘New American’ so loved by Hitlery and the left is now a permanent dolt, dullard class only good for vote harvesting every few years.
Geez, I dunno.
Could it be that we don’t treat them (medically) as though they don’t have one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel once they turn 65?
Could it be that because we, as a society, behave as though we are still happy to have them around? (and we put our money where our mouth is....you listenin’ Obama?)
Could it be because we don’t demean them with the term “pensioner” makes them sound old and put out to pasture, without value? We call them seniors, and they’re busy and on the move. And if you don’t get out of their way, they’ll run you over on the way to their next gig?
Maybe, it’s because we wouldn’t have it any other way.
I think bloggers hit the nail on the head with their realization that socialism, in any form, is deadening. When a nation waits for the government to take care of them, it becomes mindless, and usually takes to drink. The English, who were once the superior intellects of the world, are now very like white trash, shiftless and drunken. I remember years ago, I met some people from Scotland. They told me, much to my shock, that the vast majority of Scots were on the dole, and spent a great deal of time drinking since there was nothing to do. One of the fellows later killed himself. It is a great tragedy when the country from which we are descended, is literally dying.
I are one.
I've always said that America gets the best and the brightest of the worlds people.
