The racy, private email messages that have S.C. Governor Mark Sanford in the middle of a political firestorm are said to have originated from the jilted ex-husband of the governor’s alleged mistress, Maria Belen Chapur, multiple independent sources are telling FITS.
A source at The (Columbia, S.C.) State newspaper, which published several of the emails yesterday afternoon, could not confirm who sent them, however.
The paper originally received the emails several months ago but declined to investigate whether or not they were authentic until this week.
Obviously, this would be quite an interesting twist to this ongoing saga as most people - including us - naturally assumed that the emails were leaked by a political opponent of Gov. Sanford here in the United States.

I cannot believe the jilted ex-husband who was, according to reports, divorced from Maria before she began the tryst would have access to the governor's e-mail account.

On the contrary. NYT and other media were waiting until October 2012 (or at least 2010). Just like Foley thing. Dem leaders knew about it early on, but they waited until the last minute in order to maximize the damage.
Makes me wonder why people like Edwards continue their run? They must understand that eventually the truth comes out..Maybe this was why Sanford did not run in 2008..and Bill Clinton got away with multiple rapes and affairs..
I would imagine that they were holding this ammunition in case they needed it for an October surprise.

I agree. As I watched Mark Sanford make an ass of himself during his press conference, I imagined his paramour watching it, too...and dialing some other guy and asking him where he’s taking her for dinner.
I will really be upset if it turns out that not only the newspapers new about this, but if other Republicans knew and didn’t say anything - especially if they’ve known for a while.
I saw Jim DeMint getting interviewed on Monday morning, and he wouldn’t vouch for Sanford’s character, which I thought was very interesting at the time.
Aside from the damage Sanford’s caused himself, his family and his state, he has really kicked the GOP when they needed it the least. How he could take this trip on the heals of the Ensign mess, is very troubling. What was he thinking?

And here I'd been assuming the gov used one of his official email accounts, and somebody in the state government IT department with too much time on their hands leaked them, when all along the leak was from south of the equator.
I just want one of these guys to come on TV and say: “Yea, I was having an affair, and she’s really hot, and if you were married to the b!tch like have been for 27 years of hell, you’d be having an affair too.”
Supposedly, Mark Sanford has seen this woman only three times in the last year, including this last time (when he was nailed coming back from Argentina). It’s possible the media were waiting to get more substantial stuff to run with. One thing that struck me about Sanford’s bizarre press conference was that this “relationship” doesn’t seem substantive in any way. Seems like it was mostly an email romance. (I am not defending or minimizing was Sanford has done! My point is that this woman probably is much less interested in Sanford than he is in her.)
Why? It would be better to announce it only after the GOP had fully invested in him ... like just after a high profile nomination.
