Obama implores Senate to pass climate bill

WASHINGTON – Hours after the House passed landmark legislation meant to curb greenhouse gas emissions and create an energy-efficient economy, President Barack Obama on Saturday urged senators to show courage and follow suit.

The sharply debated bill's fate is unclear in the Senate, and Obama used his weekly radio and Internet address to ratchet up pressure on the 100-seat chamber.

"My call to every senator, as well as to every American, is this," he said. "We cannot be afraid of the future. And we must not be prisoners of the past. Don't believe the misinformation out there that suggests there is somehow a contradiction between investing in clean energy and economic growth."

The legislation would place the first national limits on emissions of greenhouse gases from major sources — such as power plants, factories and oil refineries — to reduce the gases linked to global climate change. It would also start moving the U.S. away from fossil fuels and toward cleaner power sources, like geothermal, wind, solar and more nuclear generators.

The complex bill, which totaled about 1,200 pages, would require the U.S. to reduce carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent from 2005 levels by 2020 and by 83 percent by mid-century.

Sponsors had originally wanted a 20 percent reduction by 2020 but had to settle with less to win the support from some lawmakers from coal, oil and farm states. Deeper cuts will be needed globally to avert the most serious consequences of global warming, research suggests.

“CO2 for different people has different attractions. After all, what is it? - it’s not a pollutant, it’s a product of every living creature’s breathing, it’s the product of all plant respiration, it is essential for plant life and photosynthesis, it’s a product of all industrial burning, it’s a product of driving – I mean, if you ever wanted a leverage point to control everything from exhalation to driving, this would be a dream. So it has a kind of fundamental attractiveness to bureaucratic mentality.” - Richard S. Lindzen, Ph.D. Professor of Atmospheric Science, MIT

Jim Inhofe said there are “only 34” yes voted in the Senate. Anyone know anything more about that number?

0bama is really a shameless liar. And an ignorant fool. The US cannot afford the massive tax increase that this useless legislation represents. And there’s nothing in it about promoting nuclear energy or doing anything to reduce non-renewable fuel consumption (increasing tax rates doesn’t count, in my book). It’s just a way to further inflate the size of and interference by the Federal Government and increase energy taxes. I am going to contact my Senators and tell them that if they vote for this piece of crap that I will work to unseat them. I urge all Freepers to do the same if they can.

We are just within a few short years of "dissenting voices" being imprisoned.

What was the perfect cocktail for the end of a free America? It was Political Correctness + White Guilt + Global Warming Hysteria. This confluence of historic trends is unsurvivable.

If this were just an energy tax, it would be disgusting, but at least in the realm of believable. But, to tax and then ship tax to 3rd world countries, (trade), that’s beyond my comprehension.

And what scares me is there are a lot of people who actually believe this is good for America.

Let me beat that horse one more time, those of you who stayed home because McCain was no better than Obama, tell me you are happy with that decision.

That stood out to me as well. To Barack Obama, "courage" means going against the will of the American people. But I think real courage is in the senators that stand up to that fascist Obama and his brave new thug adminstration.

I can only hope that the Senators are fully aware of how the majority of Americans want this bill killed. Those that vote yes will be a target of wrath that they never had before. They should be shaking in their shoes. These cowards have no idea what is coming.

“Obama implores Senate to pass climate bill”

What he actually means “Give me ALL the power and make me Ruler of the Universe”. Trust me I am the “one”.

He actually is Zero.
