Heresy: Michael Jackson Wasn’t That Good After He Left The Jackson Five
Pajamas Media ^ | June 27 | Ron Rosenbaum

I know this is heresy, blasphemy to the gods of the publicity industrial complex who created and destroyed the later Michael Jackson.

But I’ve let a day pass since his awful death before saying this: after the completely wonderful Jackson Five era, Michael Jackson was no longer a very interesting singer, not after he left the collaborative genius of the J-5. He became known for his dancing (wow, the moonwalk, really memorable!), for his stupid costumes (what was with the whole militaristic thing? And was the glove really all that interesting or distinctive in any way?), for one or two good songs (”Human Nature” or whatever it was officially called) and “Thriller” wasn’t one of them. Come on, do you really think that novelty concoction is worth another listen ever? (Okay I liked “Billy Jean” even though I still misremember the key lyric as “the chair is not my love”)...

In the words of Michael Jackson himself:

Because I’m Bad, I’m Bad-
Come On
(Bad Bad-Really, Really Bad)
You Know I’m Bad, I’m Bad-
You Know It
(Bad Bad-Really, Really Bad)
You Know I’m Bad, I’m Bad-
Come On, You Know
(Bad Bad-Really, Really Bad)
And The Whole World Has To
Answer Right Now
Just To Tell You Once Again,
Who’s Bad . . .

“Off The Wall” was his last really talented work.

Off the Wall and Thriller was all about Quincy Jones, not MJ.

He was a troubled person, but a fantastic entertainer. Sorry, but you’re in the minority and may stay in the back of the bus if you’d like. The rest of us are having fun up front....

Totally disagree.

He was a sad wreck of a human being, but an extraordinarily talented sad wreck of a human being.

Thriller has to be the most overrated song in HISTORY!

And he’s only been dead a couple days, golly, it seems like years already.

I’ve managed to avoid all the media orgasms over this death and have only been affected from the 10 million headlines posted so far on Free Republic. At this rate I doubt there will be much in the news except this for the next 25 years.

HE’S STILL DEAD.

Entertainer, yes. Artist, no.

I agree that the music the Jackson Five did was far superior than any that Michael Jackson did on his own. Yes, he was an entertainer & was probably something to see in a live concert - but a lot of that was “flash”. Yes, he was an innovative dancer & very talented back when he was still a black man.

Then he became....what I can only describe as a “monster”....really. Creepy. Insane. Dark, dark, dark.

When I listen to the early Jackson Five stuff, it makes me cry - it’s really something.

The passing of a person having this perverts proclivities would best be met with silence. Even speech against this clown recognizes him. Let him go in silence.

HE’S STILL DEAD.

Or is he? I think I spotted him the other day with Elvis.

Discussing music one day at lunch (lots of musicians where I worked) a fellow with a doctorate in musicology said "You know, brother Quincy has only one song. You hear it in everything he does."

Another responded "Yeah, and he has only one singer too" (which was Michael Jackson).

Look, no one is beyond criticism and everyboy ain't perfect ~ but mygosh did those two guys reel in the dough ~ and they made it look like fun too.

Well that's obvious. If he'd been an artist he would've cut his ear off instead of his nose....

“Bad” in 1987...was the last decent work. Everything after that point was garbage. The guy had a 5-year run with the J5 group and a 10-year run by himself. By 1990...the career was mostly finished. So we are saying now....nineteen years of virtually no great fresh material...and this big hype over the past twenty-four hours....has been over a 10-year effort?

What I find interesting here is that if the guy had simply hired one decent finance guy and let him mind the store....and then lived a reasonably rich lifestyle...he’d be worth $500 million....even if his career ended in the mid-90s.

Just curious - what did he do that makes you consider him “extraordinarily talented”? I know he was popular during the 80s, but I never figured out why.

Check out the youtube videos of MJ on Ed Sullivan in 1969 or on the Smothers Brothers in 1971. There you will see a boy who is extraordinarily talented.
