BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- A 41-year-old Argentine former reporter acknowledged having a relationship with South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, saying Sunday that widely published e-mail correspondence between the two was obtained from her account without permission.

In a brief statement sent to news network C5n of Buenos Aires, Maria Belen Chapur said she will not talk about her private life, which has already been the focus of intense media scrutiny in the United States and Argentina.

any chance her ex got hold of the emails for blackmail purposes, and the gov spilled the beans beforehand??

"No soy Belen Chapur. Soy Maria Elisa Chapur, artista plastico, Buenos Aires."

She's not the one. It's the reporterette, not the artist. Artist's website.

I have no idea. I was just yanking meandog's chain because he was sure on another thread that the Governor's wife leaked them, and that seemed so out of character to me. But your theory sounds very plausible. At least we now have an idea that it didn't happen on this end, but on the Argentina end.

No pun intended.

Question: How long did the press sit on John (boy) Edwards infidelity?

(A) Long enough to kill off Hillary's chances in the primaries.
(B) Long enough for the love child to be born.
(C) Long enough to drive Elizabeth Edwards crazy.
(D) They never intended to make it public - he's a Democrat.
(E) All of the above...

One new detail is that it was a Hotmail account. So, it would be someone who knew about the account and either knew the password, was able to guess the password, or knew enough personal details about Maria to be able to persuade Hotmail's password recovery page to reveal it (as happened to Sarah Palin last fall).

It's also possible the person got access to her computer, in which case the password would probably be found in her browser. However, she's claiming, contrary to earlier reports, it was not another boyfriend, but she strongly suspects who it is, but can't name the name.

This sure smells like a setup and trap.
The leaked emails from the lover? Right! Right out of the KGB playbook. Wonder how much DNC paid for the whole show?

Sanford seems like a lot of work. I have a feeling she’s growing tired of him as we speak.

Remember the good ol’ days when the ‘other woman’ kept her mouth shut and didn’t draw attention to herself?

She has the nerve to be affronted because someone hacked into her hotmail account. How ludicrous.

Not that she didn’t hack into someone else’s marriage!!!!

So, look where the leaked emails between Sanford and his tramp came from -- the other woman. She probably leaked them herself to get Sanford to put up or shut up -- leave his wife, or else! Sure shoots your theory all to hell....

Not convinced. But agree that this sordid episode gets pretty strange and more Alice in Wonderland "curiouser" each day.

Look it stands to reason that someone tipped The State off about his returned flight...ever been the the Atlanta airport (2nd largest in Nation after O'Hare)? It couldn't have been the "person who hacked into Maria's" e-mail 'cause he/she would have known about it, would they?
I'm still thinking that Mrs. Sanford had something to do with dropping the dime on the philandering guv...and not his Argentine lover. Why would she?

The original "anonymous" posts were sent, if we are to believe The State, about seven months ago when Jenny first found out about the affair; now that's a coincidence in my book.

Perhaps this new twist is another in a string of lies from a man who has continually spun them in an attempt to protect his wife from looking vengeful, perhaps they were sent from another source close to Mrs. Sanford. But, for me to believe, that someone in Spanish-speaking Argentina that Maria confided in hacked into her e-mail and sent the incriminating traffic to a newspaper in South Carolina is kinda implausible, IMHO!

Someone upthread suggested it was the jealous ex-husband of the mistress, who would certainly have had motive and opportunity to blow it all out to the wife and the governor in an attempt to take revenge or to extort money. Think it through; don’t just go with your prejudices — why would Mrs Sanford have it come out in such a way not only for herself — her own husband’s humiliating words of love to another woman — but also to her four children? It’s totally out of character with someone who has sacrificed so much for her children already.

The emails between Sanford and Chapur were provided by Chapur’s ex-boyfriend who was at her apartment one day and saw an email from the Governor of South Carolina on her computer screen. The boyfriend was furious because he didn’t know about the affair so he hacked into her computer and retrieved all of the emails between Sanford and Chapur. He then sent them anonymously to The State newspaper of Columbia, South Carolina.

The State could not verify their authenticity so they held on to them until the whole affair blew up in the media through the Governor disappearing and two Republican rivals of the Governor, State Senator Jake Knotts and Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer started raising questions about Mark Sanford’s whereabouts to the Governor’s staff and to the media.

Well, then I apologize. I was going on instinct. There was nothing said about the “other man” just the “other woman”!
I suppose also he tipped The State off about Sanford’s return flight to Atlanta because the newspaper’s reporter knew exactly where to look for him.
