Heard that US Representative Mike Pence (R, IN) was calling for his colleagues to conduct energy conferences? Is that what this is?
More questions than answers. I'm going over there to see what it's all about.
Build nukes, drill domestic, go green.
All I have to do is read about the latest activities of the ‘Rats and RINOs in Congress and I, myself, “go green.”
5.3 MILLION people in the metro DC area and all they can get to his lefty wet-dream conference is 500 people? That’s 0.01% of the population. You would have thought with all the emphasis on greenie junk in Congress that the entire population of DC would be dying to attend.
The blurb reminds me of a Billy Mays pitch — hurry, register now! Seats are limited and going fast! Don’t be left out of this once in a lifetime opportunity to see the latest in greenie gear.
Congressman Bartlett is one of the most conservative Republicans in congress. He routinely voted against Bush’s budgets that he thought spent too much. He’s a scientist with several patents and has been a proponent for EMP (electro-magnetic pulse) defenses and, oddly enough, peak oil theory. He has been preaching energy conservation for over a decade now. He’s a good congressman and is in no way a lefty flake. He just happens to believe in energy conservation.
And this isn’t a lefty conference, it’s a little trade show at the local fairgrounds. Although Frederick Maryland is home to a huge BP Solar office, think of this show as a fairground building with a bunch of tables from companies promoting solar water heaters and geothermal heat pumps. This isn’t Sierra Club/ ELF stuff here.
That’s all well and good. But still, shouldn’t this little event be drawing 100,000 people? I mean this greenie goo is all the rage these days according to Congress. And just for the record, how many of these companies exhibiting would even exist if it weren’t for tax breaks? You, I and the rest of the tax-paying FR community are heavily subsidizing this.
It’s at a local fairgrounds on a Monday in the summer during 4th of July week. They’ll be lucky to get the 500 people they’re hoping for.
The tax breaks really benefit solar and wind power, but even with the tax breaks they’re not good investments. Most of the other guys at the show are little local HVAC guys, duct cleaning guys, and some other small local guys. They’re not dependent upon tax incentives. But if it weren’t for tax incentives, solar and wind power would be virtually nonexistent (as they should be).
methinks I see an invitation to a Tea Party in Frederick, Maryland here...

We in the Maryland 6th Congressional District are blessed to have Roscoe Bartlett representing us. There should be may more like him. His biography is worth a quick read.
...entire population of DC would be dying to attend.
It appeared to be set up mainly for the benefit of Congressman Bartlett's constituents in the 6th District.
And this isnt a lefty conference, its a little trade show at the local fairgrounds.
I just got back and it is just like you said--no politics and a lot of local businesses showing off electric cars, windmills, solar panels, insulation, new house designs, and much more. I picked up a lot of brochures and ideas for reducing my energy costs.
I was disappointed that there was virtually no information about ethanol. Not a mention or hint of it anywhere.
I agree with your comments especially about residential solar. Residential solar PV technology is a very inefficient way to generate electricity compared to the grid (unless the grid is entirely commercial PV). The subsidies are so outrageous, amounting to 75%+. Even with these outrageous subsidies, the payback is only reasonable if you think that electricity rates will artificially rise. For my home, a 4.2KW PV system costs about $33,000 with an annual energy savings of $700 (at today’s rates). After tax credits and utility rebates, the cost is less than $8,000. In addition, the local utility must buy excess power (at wholesale rates) or offset my generation with grid power.
The massive subsidies will ensure that the residential PV industry is never efficient. Why should any industry become competitive when it receives massive subsidies? The subsidies are also driving up costs as producers increase prices to match subsidies and artificially inflated demand puts pressure on suppliers to the PV industry. I could not think of a worst way to run the energy industry.
