LANSING, Mich. -- Empty Michigan prisons could become home to hundreds of California inmates if a deal can be struck.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm sent a letter Monday to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger formally offering space for some of the inmates California is running out of room to house to Michigan.

Michigan plans to close two prisons by the end of September.

They are the Standish Maximum Correctional facility about 145 miles northwest of Detroit and a medium-security prison in Muskegon, about 45 miles northwest of Grand Rapids.

Michigan could save the jobs of about half of the 1,000 prison guards it plans to lay off by Oct. 1 if California accepts the offer.

A request for comment was left with Schwarzenegger's office Monday.

Fill those empty cots with Detroit gang-bangers and may that once great city will see a renaissance.

The devil is hiding in the details, like who’s going to pay for the cost of transporting all those felons to MI, and back to CA once their out? What if they don’t want to return to CA? How about all the civil rights whiners insisting that their families be accommodated locally for conjugal visits at taxpayer expense?

Ooooooooooh, I don’t want to think about this anymore.

We don't have enough prison space for that. Heck, all those on the city payroll would max out the prisons.

it's not a horrid idea.

Actually it is. We're still cutting the number of guards creating a dangerous situation on that front. Their families will follow and I suspect a large number of those families are illegal aliens, welfare families or both.

I read today that California has the highest cost per inmate per year, in the United States. The California cost is $45,000. If they could pay other states, with empty prisons, about $25,000 for each, it would be a win-win situation.

Here’s the state police HQ story. Pure stupidity combined with corruption and an attempt to blame the GOP thrown in for good measure.

“After living in MI for two years I can assure all FReepers of one salient fact: Granholm is a moron.”

But she has to be smart - she’s from Harvard.... just like obama, and Kerry, and Bush...oh, wait...:)

Look on the bright side. Now you’ll have somebody to operate those bulldozers to raze Flint.

The stupidity of the typical liberal politician never ceases to amaze me. I’m glad she isn’t my governor but given all of the Yankees down here, they would vote for someone like that without question. When things went to hell, be dumbfounded as to why things went to hell.

Oh, I agree the details matter. But the concept isn't inherently flawed imnsho.

Then again, the odds of Jenny getting the details right are.......zero.

I have a hard time imagining families migrating from beautiful, sunny Kali to g-dforsaken Michigan. Yes, I’ve been to both. ;)

You can have a hard time believing it all you want but it happens. Here in Jackson county we have a growing illegal alien community that visits the prison on every visiting day.

I have a friend who is a gaurd and he had to learn spanish to keep his gravy job of dealing with visitors.

A clustergrab, for sure.

The deal looks fine to me, sitting in AZ and watching hard-core, illegal alien prisoners being sent from CA to MI. Farther away from me. Those guys are really bad. And they speak with a funny accent. Oh, they kill people, in case you don’t know how violent this bunch is.

Having lived in MI for over 20 years in my youth, I feel sorry for y’all.

Whoa. Homeboy. I lived in Jackson a few years. Worked at WILX, lived on 1st St. Work (studio) was less than a mile from Cooper St, so we got escaped prisoner notices on the door regularly.

My grandmother lived by the dump on the corner of Seymore and Rosehill I think it was. Kitty corner from the golf course. She saw plenty of action too at times.

Actually I think its easier for the welfare cases to follow an incarcerated relative. As I understand it they claim hardship and get a fast track through the system.
