COLUMBIA, S.C. -- COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford declared his Argentine mistress his soul mate Tuesday but said he is committed to reconciling with his wife in hopes of saving his family and what is left of his political career.
Sanford, who also admitted meeting his lover more times than he had previously claimed, told The Associated Press in emotional interviews that he "crossed lines" with a handful of other women during 20 years of marriage.
But he said he never went as far as he did with Maria Belen Chapur, the woman at the center of the scandal that has derailed his once-promising political future.

Its happens. He ought to have had the fortitude to choose.
And, being in politics, he ought to have known he could not hide this. He either needed to file openly for divorce, to bring his public life in line with his private one, or get control of himself... again, to keep his public life in line with his private one.
As I have said elsewhere, people make mistakes, and there is redemption. He will rebuild his life, and his talents can be used in other ways. But his life as a leader is over. And being the experienced pol he is, he ought surely to have known this was the price he would pay.
When I said he needed to get a grip, it was the image of him unable to control his mouth; this one's his soul-mate, he wants to reconcile with that one... its embarrassing. Get a grip.

I know what you're saying. I've worked in latin america several times and places. But if you are a governor headed for higher office you need to get control of yourself. If you have a life mission you need to keep your eye on the ball. Thats true of any of us, trying to hold a family together, and its even more true when you aspire to public leadership.

When this first broke I read an article from the Columbia SC paper that said they got the emails back in Dec from the mistress’s ex-husband.
I wish he’d go there so we don’t have to hear anything more about it. I wish we’d never tracked him down. I wish someone from the Republican party would tell him he’s is kicked out of the party because he’s got some (temporary?) mental problems and needs to get out of the way so we can move on working to get this country back on track.

Sanford is the worst kind of adulterer- the one who tries to justify his actions guised under dime store novel words and emotions.
The term, 'once a cheater, always a cheater' is completely fitting here. He lusted after other women, not just the one he 'did the deed' with. I had a friend once who believed that until she had sex, everything else was ok and wasn't considered cheating. Uh huh. And her stupid husband took her back- twice.
Yes, and supposedly trying to reconcile-—then he goes and tells the world miss argentina is his “soul mate” and he is going to try to fall in love with his wife again. Sorry, but if I’m the wife and he makes that statement now, after all this, he’s out.
When you are a governor, and a leading candidate for POTUS, have a wife, four kids, you are just plain STUPID to hump a hottie from Argentina and think it is love. This woman will be gone in a few days and all Sanford will have left is nothing.
More like it was an act that BJ Clinton (hint hint), didn't think constituted cheating.

They said the emails were anonymous, and that they didn't act on them at the time because they couldn't verify them.
There have been separate stories that the emails were from her ex or from another boyfriend, presumably miffed that he was not her chosen one. She has denied both those stories and claims she is fairly certain of the actual source but can't reveal it.
As for Jenny Sanford, she claims to have discovered a letter from her husband to Maria some months ago.
That's a possibility. BJ provided a whole generation with a convenient redefinition of the word "sex".
Mrs. Sanford needs to take her 4 sons and go.

That strikes as much less of a big deal than the fact that he is just announced to the whole world that he's committed to reconciling his marriage AND that his Argentine lover is his "soulmate" -- in the same breath! He's moved from private backstabbing to extremely public backstabbing. His wife would have to be out of her mind to go along with an attempt at reconciliation after this.
