Romney Urges Republicans to 'Stand Up' to Obama's Policies [as he extols the virtues of Romney Care]
Fox News ^ | 2009-07-01

Posted on 07/01/2009 8:31:12 AM PDT by rabscuttle385

(snip)

On health care, Romney pointed to the successes of his own plan but criticized Obama's for its emphasis on a public option.

"The president's plan makes an enormous error by saying we're going to put government into the insurance business. We got everyone in Massachusetts insured and we did it without putting government into the insurance business," he said. "We said instead we're going to help people get private free enterprise kind of insurance they can buy from a number of different companies."

He said the system led to plunging premiums while offering a healthy choice of options for consumers.

"It's working well. We got 440,000 more people insured than when the plan was put in place, it costs less than 2 percent of the state budget -- it's a plan that's working, it's a good model," he said.

It cost the “state” so little because it cost individuals and businesses, instead.

Romney, please shut up.

SO much for the “he regrets what his plan has become” crowd of Mitt Sycophants around here.

The longer this goes the more amusing the Mittbots have become to me.

It really is a hoot watching them defend this schmuck and cry foul (or bigot) when we point out the very obvious and well documented (and growing everyday)fact this guy is no Conservative.

You fail to understand Mitt is the clear favorite and it is his turn.

The Country Club Elite Republicans (and their sycophants here on FR) have said so, and we need to take our little ignorant asses and our ignorant trailer park candidate back to the house.

Our betters have spoken.

An unpopular Obama vs Romney would leave a lot of room for a 3rd party canddate. If there was a year someone could duplicate Ross Perot, it is 2012. You are going to have disillusioned leftists, centrists AND rightists.

You can run on just 1 or 2 issues based on the economy.

Now, who that would be? I have no idea. I’m not endorsing any of these, just looking at who has name recognition to give it a go. If Jesse Ventura had not gone so far down the 9/11 rabbit hole he would have a chance..though he isn’t an economic guy. Bloomberg is a joke. Ron Paul is too old now. Not sure who fits the bill.

We may be entering a time where a person like a Donald Trump or Mark Cuban or Steve Wynn or Vince McMahon or some other half celeb/half businessman could make a run at getting 33%. I think this time around it has to be a “celeb businessman” or a business man with a lot of personality. Just an actor or known person with no economic knowledge can’t pull it off this time around, maybe in the future. Trump wouldn’t withstand actual scrutiny of his finances or personal life, but he has the kind of wide name recognition that would work. Again this isn’t who I would LIKE to see, just who could pull it off.

Creating a 3 way race dynamic vs an unpopular President and an uninspiring 2nd party candidate wouldn’t be out of the question. Especially if we are in a legit depression...there will only be one issue..the economy. I’m sure I am forgetting someone.

Yes, I'm sure you're absolutely right. Romney is just another Obama.

Of course, we actually have no idea who the Republican candidate will be in 2012, but whoever it is will certainly be a liberal.

You're right. I'll just stay home.

Your point is pointless. Reagan defied conventional wisdom and won from right-center. Bush the Elder drifted leftward and lost when he didn't have Reagan's coattails to pull him through. Bush the younger was far more conservative than his dad, but less conservative than Reagan, and had two extemely tight races. If you want to win, push conservatism.

AMEN!!!!!! SARAH PALIN is the ONLY one who can do that! I’ve been to one of her rallies (Springfield, MO). It was announced that she was coming just a couple of days before she did, and the tickets were gone in less than an hour. There were thousands (and I mean THOUSANDS) of people who packed the parking lot of Bass Pro Shops and continued in a line about a mile down the street.

THAT is the candidate who we need to run in 2012! She is the only one who can bring so many people together for a unified cause.

We need Sarah, NOT Romney! The Country Club Republican ‘Big Tent’ elitist crowd should just shut their traps!

Reagan defied conventional wisdom and won from right-center.

Did you vote for Reagan? I did and I did it despite the fact that he once supported abortion. There were plenty of "real conservatives" who didn't support Regan for a number of reasons. I supported him - yes it was his time. And then after he was elected I continued to support him despite the fact that he appointed O'Connor and Kennedy to the Supreme Court, raised taxes twice, supported amnesty, cut and ran in Lebanon and got sucked into the arms for hostages deal. He was still better than any alternative out there. And I always kept his words in mind as I do now...

When I began entering into the give and take of legislative bargaining in Sacramento, a lot of the most radical conservatives who had supported me during the election didn’t like it. “Compromise” was a dirty word to them and they wouldn’t face the fact that we couldn’t get all of what we wanted today. They wanted all or nothing and they wanted it all at once. If you don’t get it all, some said, don’t take anything. I’d learned while negotiating union contracts that you seldom got everything you asked for. And I agreed with FDR, who said in 1933: ‘I have no expectations of making a hit every time I come to bat. What I seek is the highest possible batting average.’ If you got seventy-five or eighty percent of what you were asking for, I say, you take it and fight for the rest later, and that’s what I told these radical conservatives who never got used to it.”

So... go ahead and continue to beat up on people who should be your allies. That worked so well in rallying support for Fred Thompson - NOT!.

RomneyCare is a joke, this boob trying to claim the mantle of Reagan Republican during the last election was nauseating. You mandate that individuals MUST buy a product whether they need or want it or not or face fines and punishment is NOT REMOTELY CONSERVATIVE!

And don’t even get me started on how his complete ineptitude and mishandling led to the whole “gay marriage” nonsense in the first place.

One day the Great Pumpkin of the Conservative Movement will rise out of the pumpkin patch, and a group of Freepers will take aim and blast him/her to little pieces for being insufficiently Reaganesque. If it’s Reagan himself, he won’t stand a chance.

"You have it exactly backwards."

What part of, ""I'm staying home cuz he/she isn't a real conservative", simply allows the Dems to destroy America." did you not understand?

You said that McCain did not have a chance until he picked Palin. Of course not. That's why the NY Times and the DNC picked him to run against Obama.

The point that you miss is that the Democrats are destroying America, and that is happening because people stayed home on election day because McCain wasn't a conservative.

Let me simplify it for you: The choice was between a moderate RINO and a known Totalitarian, Racist Fascist. People with your point of view chose the Fascist by staying home. You need to face the facts that whoever the next Republican Presidential Candidate is, he or she is not going to be as Conservative as many of us would like. That's just the way it is. The primary system is rigged to keep the true Conservatives out.

We need to win. Do you honestly think Romney (and I am not advocating Romney, I am simply acknowledging that he is a contender) would be the same as what we have now? Honestly?

Did you vote for Reagan?

Twice.

I did and I did it despite the fact that he once supported abortion.

LIAR. Reagan never supported abortion - he signed a bill that was meant to legalize abortion in cases of rape, incest and the health of the mother (within the realm of many pro-lifers) - NOT to allow abortion on demand. Doctors abused that last case and Reagan later regretted signing the bill.

That is the problem with you RINO boosters - you re-write history to make your points.

Oh, and once again, RINOs lose when they run for president. The point is not about alienating allies. It is instead to ignore the siren call from the establishment wing of the GOP that would rather be a chronic minority party than have to accomodate all those rube social conservatives.
