WASHINGTON – The Obama administration launched investigations of hundreds of businesses around the country Wednesday as part of its strategy to focus immigration enforcement on the employers who hire illegal workers.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has begun notifying businesses of plans to audit their I-9 forms — employment eligibility documents that employers fill out for every worker — the agency told members of Congress in an e-mail Wednesday.

Immigration officers served "Notices of Inspection" to 625 businesses, the Homeland Security Department said. By comparison, 503 such notices were issued to businesses last year, the agency said.

AH_LiveRight,
You are from Texas.
Like here in Florida there are towns in Texas that the vast majority living in them are illegals.
Indiantown, LaBelle, South Bay, Pahokee, etc are full of illegals and NEVER has an I.C.E. agent been in these towns.
Hell, they could surround the whole towns and simply back up busses and fill them up and drive to Nogales’ to dump them off.
I think the companies that are being investigated are probably owned by Republicans or folks who give to republican causes, just like a whole lot of auto dealers who were driven out of business. Majority are pubbies.

Could be. I have watched a fair amount of threads here on illegal immigration and immigration reform. The most common theme is that enforcement was promised after Reagan delivered amnesty. Selective enforcement (and non-enforcement) has always been at issue. One would imagine that most small to medium businesses are conservative, even perhaps Republican. The two are not synonymous.

Can't get too excited about it. More of the nefarious work of Obama COS Rahm "Uriah Heep" Emanuel.

As FReeper Joe Boucher posted.......companies Obama is investigating are probably owned by Republicans or Republican donors...... like the auto dealers Obama drove out of business. Majority are pubbies.

Oh wait---I forgot .....the whole point of Obama bringing Rahm in as COS was so that "tolerant and compassionate bi-partisan Rahm" could work constructively with Congress to pass an ambitious agenda...

"Tolerant and compassionate bi-partisan Rahm" lays out his agenda on inauguration day.

Not a single word on what would happen to the illegal workers.

Just fine the business and let them keep on working?

No, it’s to take the emphasis and pressure off the illegal immigrants and cripple small businesses. That’s why Obama stopped the Bush ICE raids.

How about the Federal government concentrates on creating a border, instead of just assuming there can never be one?

Harassing employers who *should* be able to assume that if you're standing in front of me, you crossed the border legally? That's just lazy cowardice.

Build the fence. Cancel medical, educational, welfare, and anchor baby rights for all illegals. Watch them self-deport.

The headline is deceptive. The “crackdown” is on business owners, not illegals. They are going to go after businesses while stopping the use of E-Verify. Owners can’t win. Illegals can’t lose.

Not a single word on what would happen to the illegal workers.

Past actions indicate that there is an administrative hearing for the employer and for the employee. If the employee failed to produce valid documents (or produced counterfeits), they get charged. If the employer provided counterfeits or invalid documents, the employer gets charged. The USCIS E-Verify program is slowly being rolled out, but has some limitations still. Such as it will show whether a work visa is currently valid, but not the expiration date. Would you want to have to re-prove your eligibility to work every day? Or worse yet, as an employer, verify every employee's eligibility every week/month? It would bankrupt the business, and you would have to have a dedicated "government compliance" staff. Hardly a conservative approach.

David Copperfield's ingratiating scoundrel fits Rahm to a tee. Uriah Heep was notorious for wielding undue influence, a manipulative bounder who was always planning and plotting, ingratiating himself into the confidence of others. Uriah Heep was obsequious, manipulative, and wormed his way into positions of influence. Uriah was a consummate con man, and not to be trusted.

Translated into the language of the popular culture, Uriah Heeps, like Rahm, position themselves as amenable to American qualities of compassion, but are insincere in these feelings; he uses important issues to advance his hidden agendas and political ambitions.

Like Uriah Heep, power-hungry Rahm feeds on others, and deploys self-serving strategies for his own self-absorbed purposes.

We conservatives are on to this. Christian conservatives are aware of Whom they serve and watch carefully to see if government promises made to them are empty.

We know this-----Rahm evinces an utter contempt for our culture and is obsessed with party politics. Watch him on TV---Rahm coyly speaks the language to appeal to American values, but he is not a true believer, he is a calculating conniver----a latter-day Uriah Heep.

Nothing happens to the illegals. This will break the backs of small businesses since Obama has “stalled” the use of E-Verify.

Federal contractors are delayed until September 8, 2009. Everybody else still participating uses the same portal. https://www.vis-dhs.com/WebDABp/vislogin.aspx?JS=YES

Really? Are you sure it hasn’t been pulled down in the past few months? That’s what I understood. Janet Napolitano claimed it was ineffective and only worked 90% of the time. I’m sure she wasn’t just talking about federal contractors. I hope you’re right.
