Monaster/News
Rep. Carolyn Maloney
Rep. Carolyn Maloney has decided to take on Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in the 2010 Democratic primary, refusing to bow to party leaders who want her to stay out, the Daily News has learned.
"She's definitely decided to run," said a senior Maloney adviser, speaking on condition of anonymity. "She's in it."
Maloney, a congresswoman since 1993 for Manhattan's East Side and a slice of Queens, will make an official announcement in two weeks, the adviser said.
The Democratic establishment, led behind the scenes by Sen. Chuck Schumer, has cleared other would-be challengers from the primary field for Gillibrand.
At Schumer's request, President Obama phoned Long Island Rep. Steve Israel in May to nudge him out. Just last week, Obama chief of staff Rahm Emanuel said Gillibrand has the White House's support.
"She's decided to run because she believes there needs to be a debate on the real issues and she wants to give New Yorkers a choice," Maloney's adviser said. "She believes her record and results make her the right person to fight for New Yorkers."
Last month, while meeting with the Daily News Editorial Board, Maloney, 61, criticized Gillibrand, 42, for her "evolving" stances on guns, immigration and the economic crisis. Maloney also questioned Gillibrand's "character."
"Some people run to get elected," Maloney told the board. "I spend my time doing things."
Gillibrand aides have disputed Maloney, saying the upstater has built a solid legislative record. Gov. Paterson gave Hillary Clinton's seat to Gillibrand in January, spurning bids by Maloney and Caroline Kennedy.
Maloney, a longtime champion of 9/11 workers' rights to health care, recently scored a major coup, winning passage of consumer legislation to curb abuses by credit card companies.
A Quinnipiac poll showed Maloney would begin the race with a fragile 27%-to-23% lead. But 44% were undecided, and Gillibrand is expected to have a significant cash advantage.
With Maloney in, "a bloody primary would almost be guaranteed," Rep. Anthony Weiner predicted last month.
Born in North Carolina, Maloney has racked up a slew of firsts. She's the first woman to represent her House district, the first New York city councilwoman to give birth while in office and the first woman to head the Joint Economic Committee, a high-profile House and Senate panel.
"I stand up for what I think is right," Maloney told The News' Editorial Board in May. "I don't think what they're doing now is right - they're trying to push everyone out of the race.
"I've never lost an election," she added. "I don't intend to start now."

PAGING GEORGE PATAKI!!!!!!
Has anyone ever heard Maloney speak? She’s a dingbat.
So is Casey who beat Santorum in Pennsylvania. The media does the speaking for them.
WOW! Identity politics at its finest
Gillibrand sure seems to have a steady stream of enemies.
It is hard to believe Gov. Patterson wasn’t so overwhelming charmed by her ... that he had to name her to the Senate.
FReepmail me if you want on or off my New York ping list. Hey, some good news!
“Gillibrand sure seems to have a steady stream of enemies.”
That surprised me, as well. She’s been doing some flip-flopping lately. I read that Gillibrand’s father was a Republican fundraiser, but I don’t see why that would matter.
ping!
I hadn't read that yet.
This biatch, Maloney, has been around Washington way too long. She’s a freeloading, gold digging, Second Amendment hater.
Now who will take on Schumer for the other NY US Senate seat, also up next year? (Mark Levin has promised Schumer's opponent his full support.)
..
Obama STILL HAS TIME to “clear opponents out” for a SINGLE NY state senate race.
Amazing. Ya gotta give him credit for focusing on the only issue that matters.
Power. Raw, pure, undiluted democratic power.
this is the U.S. Senate.
I have a feeling she is going to regret this. Any committies she sits on will probably be taken from her one at a time until she gets out and next time she runs they won’t put so much money into her campaign.
great another dim wit from downstate. Thats why the senate has done nothing in weeks, it has become a downstate versus upstate hate fest. The republicans from upstate and the democrats from downstate have now taken a position they are in the majority. I think it is time that upstaters suceed from downstate and let them distroy their half.
2010 will be fun. Governor, 2 Senators, and narrowly divided State Senate all up for election.
Gillibrand is NY Democrat which means she’s liberal. On the other hand she is decidedly not a commie, crook and/or a street thug. So she differs from most of our other elected (D) officials in this state.
Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Hear Ye!
