More than 80% of Pakistanis view the Taliban and Al Qaeda as a critical threat to the country, according to an opinion poll released Wednesday, marking a turn in public opinion that stands to bolster the army's ongoing offensive against militants close to the Afghan border.

The findings will be welcomed by Washington, which is pressing Islamabad to take the fight to insurgents blamed for scores of bloody bombings in nuclear-armed Pakistan in recent years as well as attacks on NATO and US troops in Afghanistan.

The army has been battling militants in the Swat Valley in the country's northwest since April, a campaign that has driven some 2 million civilians from their homes. In recent weeks, it has made initial forays into the mountainous tribal region of South Waziristan, where top Taliban and Al Qaeda leaders are believed to be hiding...

That justice is very sweet, but this poll is lying.

What the Pakistanis have turned against is not what we all know as Al Qaeda or Taliban.

Pakistanis believe the non-Mullah Omar faction of the Taliban is backed, funded and trained by India, Israel and America, and the people and logistics provided by Afghanistan.

As for the Mullah Omar faction that is active in Afghanistan, the Pakistanis only have love and admiration for them.

Misleading poll. I doubt that AQ/Taliban has ever had widespread support among the largest ethnic groups (Punjabi, Sindh) in Pakistan. In the tribal areas where the support of the people really matters I’m sure they remain popular.

The Pashtu and Balochs, who live in the tribal areas, only make up about 19% of the population of Pakistan.

"We've got to ask, why is this man (Osama bin Laden) so popular around the world?...Why are people so supportive of him in many countries . . . that are riddled with poverty?

"He's been out in these countries for decades, building schools, building roads, building infrastructure, building day care facilities, building health care facilities, and the people are extremely grateful. We haven't done that.

"How would they look at us today if we had been there helping them with some of that rather than just being the people who are going to bomb in Iraq and go to Afghanistan?"

This poll is delivered right on time to the Obamsky White House by the ISI there and state-run media here so that the US can now be seen as “winning” the war on man-made disasters in Afghanistan. Obamsky is committed to restoring that nation to its rightful place as a Soviet satellite. To do that, the US must stay. And to stay, “we” must be seen as “winning.”
