Jenny Sanford "may forgive" governor

The wife of embattled South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford called his affair with an Argentine woman "inexcusable" but said Thursday she is willing to forgive him.

Jenny Sanford's e-mailed statement was her first public comment since her husband told The Associated Press earlier this week that his mistress is his soul mate but he is trying to fall back in love with his wife.

"My forgiveness is essential for us both to move on with our lives, with peace, in whatever direction that may take us," Jenny Sanford said in the statement. "Mark has stated that his intent and determination is to save our marriage, and to make amends to the people of South Carolina. I hope he can make good on those intentions, and for the sake of our boys."

She said it is up to South Carolina voters and elected officials to decide whether they can "give Mark another chance."

Sanford returned last week from a secret trip to Argentina to see his mistress, Maria Belen Chapur. His staff had told the public he was hiking the Appalachian Trail, and he later apologized for misleading them.

Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press then that she learned of the affair in January when she discovered a letter Sanford had written to Chapur. She said he had repeatedly asked permission to go Argentina to see Chapur, but she denied it.

Spokesman Joel Sawyer said Thursday that Mark Sanford plans to spend the holiday weekend with his wife and sons in Florida, where his in-laws live.

"He remains committed and determined to repair the damage he has done in his marriage and to building back the trust of the people of South Carolina," Sawyer said.

Don’t take that forgiveness, Mark. It’s a license for her to make you miserable for the rest of time.

Wifes have that license at 'I do'.

I think they’re both whacked. Why are they both telling everyone all of this?

"How do you know? She is probably a better politician than he is."

Any man that vanishes on his kids over father's day weekend to fly to a foreign country to be with his mistress is a miserable creature. Period. End of Sentence.

That is how I know.

Well, if thats the case then he should have stayed in Argentina.

I doubt if it is the case.

I just wish they would do this in private. He should resign, and go home.

He is clearly losing it.

Typical ‘joe 6 pack’ response: You have no idea if he is ‘miserable’. Are you making that statement based on that lame ‘excuse’?

ok, as I said he’s been the fool. That doesn’t make her noble or perfect.

She found his emails and is probably the one that sent them to the press. She’s also probably the one that told the reporter what flight he was returning on.

From her statement:
“I believe it is how we respond to the challenges we face in life, and what we learn from them, that is most telling about who we truly are.”

Jenny, the fact that you are issuing press statements on your troubled marriage IS truly telling of who you really are. And no, its not an excuse that he is even worse. I feel sorry for the kids - if either parent had the best interests of the kids in mind they would STFU in public.

What he should have done...

Take a letter, Maria,
Address it to my wife,
Tell her I’m not coming home,
I’m going to start a new life.

i really doubt any mother would expose her sons to the ignominity of those published emails. i wouldn’t blame her for tipping the press of to his flight #, though.

I don’t read it as her “taking him back” as much as her committing to move on and not allow her anger or bitterness poison the lives of her children and herself.

Come on Jenny! Sarah Palin never would've taken this from Todd.

Wow, I'm glad to hear that you know exactly how someone, you don't even personally know, would react to a situation. I learned a long time ago, never predict how people are going to react to situations, particularly in their marriages. Frankly I wish more people would keep their issues private.

"ok, as I said he’s been the fool. That doesn’t make her noble or perfect."

Nor does it justify him vanishing on his family or vacating his office to be with his mistress.

"She found his emails and is probably the one that sent them to the press. She’s also probably the one that told the reporter what flight he was returning on"

And that somehow justifies what he did? I say what I did because about 10 years ago, I found myself in a loveless, stagnant marriage that had gone on too long. I didn't cheat. I didn't stop showing up for work. I didn't lie to my family or subordinates. I got a divorce and moved forward with my life. A wife can be cruel, unloving, cynical, politically adept or downright machiavellian. The man has a choice of reacting with or without honor and dignity and Sanford chose the latter.

Jenny was off to a good start; now she is making me as sick as her husband. . .who lost me on ‘soul mate’; and should have lost his wife on that ‘sharing’ as well.

Enough already.

The Sanfords are embarassing.

He certainly more than her...but she appears to want some time in the spotlight.

They should collect their dirty laundry and bring it back inside.

Hey, Jenny. He’s making a fool of you...and embarrassing his children, while continuing to swoon/lust/ over his “soul mate.” Have some respect for yourself, woman! Lawyer up and bail out of this mess...it’s over, and you can do better for yourself and your sons. Don’t play the fool for him...be an example to your sons.

What part of “he’s a fool” don’t you understand?

“And that somehow justifies what he did? “

What part of “he’s a fool” don’t you understand? Of course it doesn’t justify but everyone is assuming she’s some noble creature. We don’t know whats going on and if she was so noble she would not be holding press conferences. The family needs prayer not another press release or news conference.
