Many Uighurs complain they are marginalised economically and politically in their own land, which has rich mineral and natural gas reserves. Looks like the Chinese want to secure their internal energy reserves.

That is Chinese occupied East Turkestan or Uyghurstan. This is not really a religious thing. The ChiComs are pursuing a policy of displacement in its occupied non-Han areas including Tibet, East Turkestan, Manchuria, Inner Mongolia, the Zhuang in Guangxi, etc. (For a full list see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_groups_in_China )
If this were an issue of religion than the Muslim Hui, who are Chinese, would also be rebelling.
