“Widespread Violence in Urumqi”
By B. Raman

SNIPPET: “2. Over 1000 Muslims (some estimates put the number at 3000) came out into the streets in different parts of the city and attacked the security forces, Han passers-by and shops owned by Hans.”

SNIPPET: “6. There has been a recrudescence of jihadi violence in Uzbekistan, Kyrgystan and the Xinjiang provice of China since the beginning of this year. While local grievances of the Uighurs are believed to be responsible for the fresh wave of unrest in Xinjiang, the revival of pro-Taliban activities in Uzbekistan and Kyrgystan has come in the wake of attempts by the US to find alternate routes for the movement of logistic supplies to their troops in Afghanistan through Russia and the Central Asian Republics. Following frequent attacks by the Pakistani Taliban on convoys carrying logistic supplies passing through the Pashtun areas, the US has embarked on an exercise to find alternate routes.

7. Reliable sources say that Al Qaeda has been encouraging the Uzbeks, the Uighurs and the Chechens to unite to foil this US exercise and to target the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s joint operations against terrorism.”

U.S. Embassy Beijing released the following Warden Message on July 6:

This Warden Message is to inform Americans of reports of unrest in Urumqi, the capital city of Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, and to advise Americans to carefully consider their travel plans to this area.

The Embassy has received first-hand reports from American citizens in Urumqi about violent clashes and heavy police presence throughout the city. U.S. and official Chinese media are also reporting incidents of violence.

While there are no indications that this violence is directed at U.S. citizens, the Embassy advises Americans in Xinjiang and especially in Urumqi to avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place. U.S. citizens in Urumqi should remain indoors and avoid unnecessary movement within the city.

Americans with travel plans to Xinjiang are advised to defer travel at this time.

For the latest security information, Americans living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov, where the current Worldwide Caution, Public Announcements, and Travel Warnings can be found. “They think the Chinese sneak pork into their food.”

Well, considering the Chinese snuck poison into my dog’s food and chemicals and lead into my kid’s toys, such a beilef may well be spot on.

What is it with that guy with the glasses in the upper right corner?...

Every photo has to have its designated nerd?

Are you "stuck on stupid"? I stipulated that Islam is bad. Stop regurgitating your religious prejudices and engage your analytical mind (IF you have one)...

Look at the evidence: Ever see three fires start simultaneously atop (at least) three high-rises?

That photo is evidence of coordinated action. Irrational, random mobs fueled by (religious) anger do not act that synchronously...

Some (cell phone?) coordinated force (Uighur terorist group?) -- or some force with aerial access (government aircraft) is acting under the cover of the mob action.

There is something beyond PO'd (Muzzy) crowds at work there...

You have to remember, the Chinese don’t give a rip if the Muslims don’t eat pork. If there is pork in the ingredients, the Muslims need to happy they have food in the eyes of the Chinese. The Chinese view the Muslim phobia about pork as ungratefulness considering the Chinese remember when they were lucky to get a meat once a month and God only know what it was. Even vegeterian chinese won’t complain if meat is in the pot.

The Chinese view the whole pork thing as an opportunity for the Muslims to get over themselves. If you don’t want pork, don’t order pork. But STFU about the soup.

This bit here reminds me of my house.

So this cultural/religous divide is about as profound as can be? Getting colonized would really suck.

No, that’s not it, he seems hard, angry, agressive, like he is about to yell.

Actually, it looks to me like he's trying to smile, but can't quite manage something that looks photogenic.

Why do you insult people that agree with you? If you thought for more than 1 sec, you would have understood that I didn’t reply only to you. You have an attitude problem.

Also government working with the rioters...wow, now I have heard everything, what’s next? UN Helicopters? Yes, it was coordinated by the rioters, but anything else is speculation, in your case, pretty wild.

It looks to me that tops of those three highrises are normally lit that way. They seem to have elaborate penthouses on top. The smoke from the lower foreground fire just makes it look like the highrises are on fire too.

“Chinese Media: 1434 Arrested in Xinjiang Riots”
By VOA News
07 July 2009

SNIPPET: “Tensions between Han and Uighurs blew up last month after a false rumor spread throughout a toy factory in Guangdong that Uighur workers raped two Chinese girls. A huge fight broke out, killing two people.

Chinese authorities have accused the Uighurs of seeking independence for Xinjiang, where they are the majority ethnic group. Xinjiang borders a number of Central Asian states with large Muslim populations, including Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. The Uighurs say the government exaggerates the threat of an independence movement in order to justify its control.”
