White House Kept Justice Lawyers in Dark on Warrantless Wiretapping
The Washington Post ^ | 10 July 2009 | Carrie Johnson

Posted on 07/10/2009 11:55:55 AM PDT by Erik Latranyi

The Bush White House so strictly controlled access to its warrantless eavesdropping program that only three Justice Department lawyers were aware of the plan, which nearly ignited mass resignations and a constitutional crisis when a wider circle of administration officials began to question its legality, according to a watchdog report released today.

The way it should be. Now our enemies know everything and are getting let loose on tropical islands instead of incarcerated at GITMO.

” only three Justice Department lawyers were aware of the plan,”
“ wider circle of administration officials began to question its legality”

anyone besides me see a problem here?

Consider the source.

You can tell things are going badly for the Obamanuts since they are trotting out the old, worn out “Bush lied” canard.

Yet Barack Obama is Continuing the Program and there is not a PEEP. The Libs as usual want it both ways.

“when a wider circle of administration officials began to question its legality”.

If it was so tightly controlled how did they all find out?
Heads should have rolled.

Doesn’t the first sentence contradict the title?

A mor accurate title would be, “Bush White House informed only a few selected officials at the Justice Department.”

Obama administration propaganda alert. I guess the economy isn’t doing so well.

The media prostitutes apparently have a shortage of news, so they talk about Bush. They should be talking about the fact that 3.4 million more people are unemployed now than when the Socialist Obama took office. Obama is a dismal failure.

Meanwhile, Obama and many of his fellow Socialists have said the “stimulus package” is working. But then they say more “stimulus” may be needed. And then Obama claims he didn’t have all the facts about the economy. Which facts was he missing? Obama and the other Socialists don’t bother to tell us that only 7% to 10% of the $787 billion “stimulus package” has been spent.

Despite 9.5% and rising unemployment, Obama has stated that he intends to let the Bush tax cuts expire. That alone will result in a few more million lost jobs. Plus, Obama is hell-bent on cap & trade, which will make electricity costs skyrocket, resulting in the loss of a few more million jobs. And Congress is increasing the minimum wage from $6.55 to $7.25 per hour effective July 24th, which will result in the elimination of more jobs. Plus, the Demo-Socialists want a surtax on the so-called “rich” to pay for socialized medicine, and a fine on individuals and/or companies who fail to obtain medical insurance, which will result in more lost jobs and more people forced into government medicine.

In summary, Obama and his Socialist Congress have a plan to destroy the economy and our freedom. This is not accidental or due to inexperience. It is premeditated, deliberate, evil and contrary to the Constitution.

Unemployment is heading for 20%.

Bush should have called their bluff re the protesting lawyers and fired all of them. He should have cleaned out the Augean stables at Justice the day he took office. Too many Democratic weasels and whimps.

ANd he should have fired his own Republican cowards who caved in to Sandy the Burglar Berge and gave him a slap on the wrist for destroying Top Secret US policy documents.

I hate cowards and traitors.

Here’s the deal. The Repubs are fine with the President overstepping the law and the constitution to protect us from terrorists. They trust him not to misuse this power. The dems are not trusting of a Repub president and want him to be bound by the law of the land, but they don’t worry about their hero O misuing the power.

Me, I worry about allowing any president to ignore the law or the constitution. Loss of freedom is more likely to come from within than from without.

“Many conservatives burrowed within the Department of Justice have long complained that Gonzales (and therefore, Bush) has permitted career government employees and hold-overs from Democratic Administrations to remain in perches of power and thereby water down conservative directives from the top. “

What about Attorney General Ashcroft, who wouldn’t sign off on the program, though he was requested to do so on his hospital bed? He’s not exactly a holdover from a Democratic Administration.

What about Attorney General Ashcroft, who wouldn’t sign off on the program

Ashcroft was sick as a dog from pancreatic disease and could barely raise himself up from his hospital bed. One of those Justice Department rat lawyers, a weasel named James Comey, had literally raced to Ashcroft's room ahead of Card and Gonzales and (I'm guessing) fed Ashcroft a breathless pile of lies just before the President's men got there. See, Comey was the acting Attorney General while Ashcroft was hospitalized, and the whole fiasco was an ego-driven power play on Comey's part. He had his opinion and wanted to exert his command. The joke was on him, though - - the Bush people went around him.

As it turned out, the part of the program that Comey objected to was a data mining operation called "Stellar Wind". Zillions of email subject lines and phone numbers and call durations, etc., were stored and analyzed by NSA based on algorithms to search for possible terrorist links. I don't know if anything of value ever came of the program - - it sounds like a boondoggle to me. In fact, it sounds a lot like "Able Danger".

FRegards,
LH
