Dispute over flag protest erupts in Wisc. village

WAUSAU, Wis. – An American flag flown upside down as a protest in a northern Wisconsin village was seized by police before a Fourth of July parade and the businessman who flew it — an Iraq war veteran — claims the officers trespassed and stole his property.

A day after the parade, police returned the flag and the man's protest — over a liquor license — continued.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin is considering legal action against the village of Crivitz for violating Vito Congine Jr.'s' First Amendment rights, Executive Director Chris Ahmuty said.

"It is not often that you see something this blatant," Ahmuty said.

In mid-June, Congine, 46, began flying the flag upside down — an accepted way to signal distress — outside the restaurant he wants to open in Crivitz, a village of about 1,000 people some 65 miles north of Green Bay.

A real man would have taken Old Glory to the courthouse steps for an old fashioned 1960s era burning.

A liquor license dispute turns into a first amendment issue?

I have had a flag upside down in the window of my station wagon since about Nov 10th. Took me a couple of trips to stores to find one the right size.

Exactly. If he had burned the flag instead, he would have been covered by the First Amendment. I don’t get it.

He's lucky someone didn't call 911.

Flying or displaying the flag upside down is an acceptable method of displying the flag as a signal of dire distress and in instances of extreme danger to life or property. This is accoring to Title 36, U.S.C., Chapter 10, § 176.

If what Obama and his cohorts and abettors are doing to this nation at all levels is not putting this Republic, its Constitution, liberty, and property in dire distress and danger, then nothing is.

Not sure how to respond but if the flag was at his place upside down and there was no distress, couldn’t it be like placing a false 911 call??
