Riding a bike around Annapolis, I note that the flags at the Old State House, the Naval Academy, and the library are at half-staff again. This time for Nice, France. Or is it Dallas? Or Baton Rouge? I confess I lose track. It seems the flags have been at half-staff most of the time since President Obama took office. It also seems the pace of terrorist attacks is picking up. Secretary of State John Kerry thinks this is proof that ISIS is on the run. How fatuous. That’s rather like saying the German troops marching through the Arc de Triomphe...

In what was perhaps one of the most violent clashes yet between police and protesters outside the Republican National Convention, a protester accidentally set himself on fire trying to be a bad ass and burn an American flag. While protesters were yelling “Burn that rag!” a Cleveland police officer reportedly began shouting, “You’re on fire! You’re on fire, stupid!” at the protester whipping around the burning flag that had to be extinguished by firefighters before more people caught on fire. (Watch the video at link)

Instead, the 29-year-old former Marine, who served in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, says he was thinking about his country, the meaning of the holiday and his best friend, Geoff, another Marine who killed himself two years ago after returning stateside. October 23, 2012 Flagging an Issue By Charles Kesler My wife, the very shrewd Sally Pipes, penetrated to the heart of the debate in a single sentence tonight when, only about 15 minutes into the exchange, she observed: “Romney’s flag pin is much larger than Obama’s flag pin.”Indeed, it was, as I confirmed in the next split screen of the candidates.Ever since the 1960s, liberals have been sensitive about the dimensions of their patriotism, and here, on national television, in a debate over foreign policy, Obama had been clearly outmaneuvered. The item, known as “Our Strips: Flag Poster” redesigned the American flag using the Obama for America logo. The print was the target of conservative backlash last week. A page where the flag was now returns as error page. A cached version of the website still shows the product but returns a error page when attempting to add the item to the cart.

The Obama campaign produced a poster of an American flag, with Obama’s “O” symbol replacing the field of stars, as an item of campaign merchandise, selling for $35. The image was tasteless at best. It is hard to imagine any other politician arrogant enough to remake the flag in his own image: Barack Obama, however, has never been one to be deterred by bad taste. The larger problem was that, as many pointed out, the flag bore an uncanny resemblance to this grisly photograph taken at the American consulate in Benghazi: So the Obama campaign has quietly ditched the flag...

(LRO slewed 19° down-Sun allowing the illuminated side of the still standing American flag to be captured at the Apollo 17 site.) An enduring question ever since the manned moon landings of the 1960s has been: Are the flags planted by the astronauts still standing? Now, lunar scientists say the verdict is in from the latest photos of the moon taken by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC): Most do, in fact, still stand. "From the LROC images it is now certain that the American flags are still standing and casting shadows at all of the sites, except Apollo 11,"...
