(Not radio) Howie Carr Thread July 12-24, 2009
howiecarr.com ^ | 07/12/09 | raccoonradio

Howie Carr had hip surgery the other day and will absent from his radio show for the next two weeks. There will be various fill ins. Here's the thread for these upcoming two weeks. If Howie has any newspaper columns I will repro them here. (note: so far no sign of any Sunday Herald column for 7/12 but if it appears I'll post it)

Ping for the Howie Carr list for the next 2 weeks. Howie will be off the radio (and yes, will miss the Chappaquiddick
anniversary) but may have some columns. We can also talk about what’s going on; the various fill in hosts, etc.

So far no sign of a Howie column in today’s Sunday Herald but if it’s posted it’ll go here.

Years of cruller gobbling, clam stuffing, hot dog biting, ice cream licking( classic New England diet) have taken their toll.

Not to mention Howie's opiated sloth inerntess( lighting grenades dives for a street coins excepted). :)

On the Chump Line the other day, one guy suggested that Howie have the doctors "bag up the old hip for the pugs."

From today's Herald

House arrest for Howie Carr!
But not for long
By Renee Nadeau

Howie Carr sat cuffed to a hospital bed yesterday, a day after undergoing a total hip replacement at Massachusetts General Hospital that has laid up the all-star Herald columnist and WRKO talk-show host for a few weeks.

“I’m moving around too much,” he said, then chuckled. “They want to make sure that I don’t flee, that I don’t go on the lam.”

Carr said he was doing well post-op. While he is expected to be out of commission for about two weeks, he said he’s hopeful he may be up and about before that, back to terrorizing hacks and hoods a bit sooner.

In the meantime, he is keeping himself busy trying to pick the lock on his cuffs and reading the Herald, which is being delivered to his hospital room.

The cards and letters of well-wishing that he’s received are greatly appreciated, he said. But he had his mind on other correspondences.

“Keep dropping those dimes,” he instructed. “I’ll be back to work before you know it.”

Haha that is a funny photo, I can’t believe he didn’t plan this around the Teddy & MaryJo’s 40th!

Yup I know. If you go on his Ted K site you can find an interview he did with the diver, and the pic of Howie that I mentioned (holding up a beer can: “Hey, Ted’s been here!”). They did a show from the party house in ‘94 for that anniversary. (He was on WHDH at the time; the sound clip starts with the music bed of “Crystal Blue Persuasion” I think and the voice of Jim Cutler, often heard on WEEI
(”and NOW it’s time for Planet Mikey!”) and ESPN.

“They did a show from the party house in ‘94 for that anniversary. (He was on WHDH at the time” Man I’m getting old, I remember that but it seems like just yesterday, did he do one in 1999 on location maybe?

Yes, he may have...

Here is the very beginning of the file i mentioned and note that Jim Cutler says it’s on WHDH. I think that may be the year that WHDH had Rush and Howie and they moved over to
WRKO so that 850 could become sports radio WEEI.

And indeed, a month after that “25th anniversary” broadcast
of Chappaquiddick on Howie’s show, Howie moved to 680

from bostonradio.org profile on WEEI 850:
>>It proved to be the last format change for WHDH. In mid-1994, ARS announced its purchase of the programming and call letters of Back Bay Broadcasting’s WEEI 590. The change came in late August; Friday, August 26 was the last weekday for WHDH, and on the last live program, talk host Howie Carr took to the sidewalk outside 7 Bulfinch Place to auction off the contents of the WHDH studios for charity. At midnight, August 28, the last WHDH programming came to an end, and an anonymous board operator sent the station to the history books with a recorded toilet flush.
The next morning, WEEI’s sports programming made its debut on 850

Thanks!

Now...WBCN is moving to 98.5 on Aug 13 as “WBZ-FM the Sports Hub” w/ Pats, Bruins, and sports talk. WBMX 98.5 takes their place on 104.1. The folks at Entercom (WEEI, down the hall
from WRKO) can’t be happy.

Will be taking a break from the show’s podcasts until Howie gets back.

I’m not a big fan of the colonel.

from the Media Biz column in today’s Herald:

Howie Carr has returned home after undergoing a total hip replacement at Massachusetts General Hospital last week. The WRKO-AM (680) host and Herald columnist left the hospital Tuesday and said yesterday that he’s feeling better.

Carr’s physical therapist told him he was “doing good” and “just not to get too frisky or active.” He expects to return to the air July 27 and to the Herald before that.

Here that Captain! Can't get too frisky....(I was going to make a food reference, but all of Howie's favorite foods are 'frisky' references - lol)

Why does Avi Nelson refuse to do the “Chump Lime”, every time that Avi subs for Howie? Does he not understand that the “Chump Line” is one of the most popular segments of Howie’s entire show, if not the most popular segment?

Well, time for another “Death Pool” after Howie gets back, if not before he gets back.
