The posh and picturesque town that juts into San Francisco Bay is poised to do something unprecedented: use cameras to record the license plate number of every vehicle that crosses city limits.
Some residents describe the plan as a commonsense way to thwart thieves, most of whom come from out of town. Others see an electronic border gate and worry that the project will only reinforce Tiburon's image of exclusivity and snootiness.
"I personally don't see too much harm in it, because I have nothing to hide," commodities broker Paul Lambert, 64, said after a trip to Boardwalk Market in downtown Tiburon on a recent afternoon.
"Yet," he said, "it still has the taint of Big Brother."

Many private business’s could install such technology on the street in front of their property. They don’t have access to the data base, but they could contribute them to the police after a crime.
We live in a similar neighborhood. Only two good ways in and out and all the crime comes from outside. I would be in favor of doing the same thing to defend my life, property and property values.
You for to add ‘and to defend my freedom’.

This is a great opportunity for monkey wrenching. License plate cameras have to be mounted fairly low to function properly. A box, grocery bag or spray paint is all that is needed. If a larger statement is desired there is this:

The danger of technologies like this is a police state can arrive overnight. There are so many laws on the books already, the only thing preventing essentially a dictatorship is the cost of enforcement.

I installed a Stealth Cam on my property and have photos of certain folks trying to break into my garage in the middle of the night. I passed along the photos to the police.
