Well I guess I am alone in my reaction BUT...
I would rather they held the children responsible for their parents than hold me (completely unrelated) and all the other taxpayers liable and force us to pay for their upkeep. Let the families work it out between themselves.
Well that isn’t the choice.
The mother has means. It should be between her and those she did business with and nobody else including the taxpayer.
No, you are not alone.
But you realize that the amount of taxes you pay will be the same either way, don’t you?
On the one hand I agree completely with your sentiments. On the other hand, my family has had so much tax money (including social security and medicare) confiscated from it by foul, stinking government scumbags during my lifetime that I want to grab back whatever I can, however I can. So I say, take care of my mother, you stinking government scumbags.
Thing is, eventually it will hit you. Because of this everyone’s own rates on insurance and such could go up. Further who says they won’t come after the rest of us? Joint and Several liability is an evil thing.
I haven’t seen anyone advocate government (taxpayer) responsibility - mostly that the mother needs to be sued for the money by the creditor, and leave the son alone.
As a kid raised in foster care with total failures for an egg and sperm doner - I will not pay 1 red cent for either one of them.
Are you prepared to see this extended to aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, etc.? Because if this becomes more widespread, that’s exactly where it will go.
I for one have a few nieces and cousins whom I suspect would absolutely love to do whatever they want and stick us with the bills.
With this approach, there is no incentive for personal responsibility, and no incentive for a business to refuse to contract with irresponsible parties.
I’ve reached the same conclusion - that we’ve always paid into the government but never received anything in return. So, I won’t feel guilty if the government ever has to return the favor, though I don’t expect it will ever happen.
