Russian military confirms test-launch of Sineva ballistic missile

MOSCOW, July 14 (RIA Novosti) - Russia has successfully test-launched a Sineva sea-based ballistic missile, a source in the Defense Ministry confirmed on Tuesday. "The launch was conducted on Monday from a Delta IV class strategic nuclear-powered submarine in service with Russia's Northern Fleet," the source said. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Monday that Russia had successfully test-launched a ballistic missile from a strategic submarine, but did not specify the type of missile or the name of the submarine.

"The target was hit and the pieces of the missile landed in the designated area," the president said at a meeting with Navy personnel in Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi. The RSM-54 Sineva (NATO designation SS-N-23 Skiff) is a third-generation liquid-propellant intercontinental ballistic missile that entered service with the Russian Navy in July 2007. It can carry four or 10 nuclear warheads, depending on the modification.

Russia is planning to equip its Delta IV class submarines with at least 100 Sineva missiles.

The Sineva carries 10 independently targetable re-entry vehicles instead of four. The new missile has a longer range and a modern control system developed for Makeyev’s Bark SLBM. It can carry four or 10 nuclear warheads, depending on the modification. Each warhead will carry 100 kilotons a piece

Russia develops offensive weapons platforms in the form of mobile, submarine launched ballistic missiles.

Russia is offended by U.S. development of an anti-ballistic missile shield that would defend the U.S. and our allies from ballistic missile attacks.

Obama bows to international pressure (and his own personal dislike of military spending) and reduces the anti-ballistic missile shield program.

I feel safe... Very safe... Well, not really.

So Russia moves on forward with all of their missile systems yet crybaby and threaten us on helping Poland and other Baltic countries set up a missile shield system.

This is not possible.
We now have world peace because of The One.

Our friends in The Soviet Union Russia would never do such a thing and this is a trick created by George W Bush, Dick Cheney, Sarah Palin and the RACIST at Free Republic to make us doubt the perfection of The One.

The Sineva carries 10 independently targetable re-entry vehicles instead of four.

This is a major step for the Russians' nuclear deterrent because, given current Russian manufacturing, there is a very strong possibility that that one of the missiles would work.

I agree. The Russians are not known for “quality” work. Their technology is still way behind ours.

This crap doesn’t worry me. We still have Mutual Assured Destruction, even if it’s not called that. Still I agree about the need for more missile defense. Not so much against Russia but against nutcase rogue states which we will NEVER be rid of.

You don’t know what you talking about.

“Sineva” SLBM is the best submarine-based missile ever constructed in term of throw-weight capability.

Russia leads in rocket and missile technology.
Even NASA uses Russian-designed / Russian-made rocket engines.

American equipment is well-known as maintain nightmare.
Russian technology = rugged, durable and very effective.

We have the best missiles in the world. All of them ICBMs uses GPS technology. NASA uses military rockets.
