North Dakota Could Have a Huge New Oil Field

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Dozens of fruitful wells beneath the rich Bakken shale in North Dakota continue to fuel a hunch among oilmen and geologists that another vast crude-bearing formation may be buried in the state's vast oil patch. Lynn Helms, director of the state Department of Mineral Resources, said recent production results from 103 newly tapped wells in the Three Forks-Sanish formation show many that are "as good or better" than some in the Bakken, which lies two miles under the surface in western North Dakota and holds billions of barrels of oil.

"I think it's a big deal and we're pretty fired up about it," Helms said.

Companies have reported some Three Forks wells recovering more than 800 barrels daily, considered decent by Bakken standards.

Denver-based Whiting Petroleum Corp. has drilled two wells in the Three Forks formation, with one that recorded more than 1,000 barrels of oil a day, said John Kelso, a company spokesman.

"We are excited about Three Forks but it's early on in the play," Kelso said. "I do know a lot of companies are redirecting focus from the Bakken to Three Forks."

Whiting has one Bakken well that recorded more than 4,000 barrels a day last year, thought to be a record for the formation and about double the highest Three Forks well drilled to date.

Kelso said Whiting's primary focus at present is on the Bakken. The company has more than 300,000 acres under lease in North Dakota.

Too bad we won’t be allowed to do anything about it.

...while we're still building windmills.

Don't shortchange these critters. One of the most important things they are for is so the state legislature can tilt at them. And they do, those nitwits.

For heaven’s sake don’t tell BHO and the Congress. They will find some exotic insect, put it on the Endangered Species List, and then use it as an excuse to make drilling off limits.

The Dems would rather have us dependent on foreign oil rather than drilling here, creating jobs and moving towards energy independence.

Yeah. I bought stock in a company in the Bakken range, and sold them at .33 cents a share. Don’t consider buying any shares in any company up there! It’s a rip off.

Don’t need it. Obama green fuels will replace oil and spur economic growth like we’ve never seen. That’s what he said, and the MSM has told us many times what a genius he is, an IQ too high to even be measured.

Yeah, but [ insert Liberal anti-oil argument here ]

- it's only a small amount of America's needs (bogus math, like ANWAR)

- we need to get a way from a petroleum-based economy (contradicts first argument)

- it's too expensive to develop (as opposed to...?)

- endangered [ ] lives there (since when?)

etc, etc, etc

Was just about to write the same thing when I first saw the article. Barry and compnay will not allow the drilling, so the find(s) are meaningless at this juncture in time. I can still remember him agreeing to drill and do whatever it takes to make America more energy independent....see how that is playing out, huh?

I “think” Pickens has pretty much “thrown in the towel” on windmills...can't get funding from us (American taxpayers) to build transmission lines...he's now promoting natural gas...

“The Dems would rather have us dependent on foreign oil rather than drilling here, creating jobs and moving towards energy independence.”

Exactly!

To think that we are living in the richest natural energy country on the planet with oil, natural gas and coal to fulfill our energy needs for hundreds of years and I won't even get into the nuclear energy possibilities;
and we are being led by a bunch of “global warming” nuts!

11/2010 & 11/2012 won't come soon enough for me!

Can't have this. Plentiful, cheap energy means free citizens. The Obama Administration must stop any such exploration and development. They are all about allocation of scarcity, artificially created privation, and fostering dependency on government.

All drilling and pumping will be stopped as soon as Congress and/or President 0bama are able to map out “our” newest national monument. The Three Forks-Sanish National Monument. Just like Grand Escalade National Monument was saved from Americans so will this wonderful wilderness area.

I am gonna puke.
