Michigan unemployment Rate Soars to 15.1%
WLNS ^ | 07/15/09 | Various

Posted on 07/15/2009 12:09:23 PM PDT by Kieri

Michigan's unemployment rate for June of 2009 jumped to 15.2%. That's a 1.1% increase over the prior month.

Rates usually climb or fall by a few tenths of a percent. It's rare to see such a substantial increase or decrease.

But experts say the struggling economy combined with the ailing auto market means Michigan has been hit harder than other states.

We'll have much more on the numbers and what it means for Michigan tonight on 6 News at 5 and 6.

They still add to the base of "unemployed people" even though they're not legitimately part of the community. They'll be competing for the same limited number of openings.

Sounds like Michigan is entering Great Depression territory.

Be interesting to see if Michiganders will start emigrating to work alongside the Poles in the UK. Maybe go down to Brazil to teach mechanics at Embraer.

For every union job lost you can count on between 5 to 10 non union jobs lost.

Yep. A beautiful state in most parts too. Unfortunately, too many folks vote Dem Socialist out of habit. All of the above is true of my home state as well, btw.

Reagan knew how to win Michigan but today’s fine conservatives are too busy kicking the people Reagan brought to his side to want to talk to them.

It plays right into the hands of the democrats.

Looks like the Democrats they keep electing have served Michigan well, no?

The problem with MIchiganders is that, they don't know to think any different. They're stuck on stupid. Given an unemployment rate of between 15 and 20%, the people of Michigan would still vote for democrats for congress and a democrat president.

I heard last night, on one of the talk/discussion shows (on FOX) that, even with the high unemployment rate, Obama still has a high approval rate of over 60%. The people there are completely clueless about there being better hope and better change if they would just learn how to get rid of their ideological jail and look to something different to help solve their problems.

No figures but as a lifelong resident who has been both union and non union I would estimate between 3 anf 5 percent of the lost jobs are union. For every union job lost you can count on between 5 to 10 non union jobs lost.

Thanks. I was just curious if the Michigan numbers in this current downturn in employment was any different than in the past. Your estimate also seems to be based on the somewhat recent historical trend, which is probably a good one. I'll see if I can find some new statistics.

Reagan won Michigan for the same reason Nixon did: a backlash against bussing/crime, as well as residual anti-communism among those of eastern European ancestry in metro Detroit and Lansing.

Western Michigan has the sane, but eastern Michigan has the bodies. Its the reverse of Washington State in that regard.

I suspect the people affected don't need to wait for the News at 5 to understand what it means for them.

We’re in the same sinking, friggin’ blue boat, and I’ll be the first to admit it...we did have 1800 people out on July 4th in Olympia..and 5,000 out on 4/15...so some signs of life, perhaps..

This "SE MI loon" thinks otherwise, but who am I to mess with your narrow minded biases?
