Matthews Commemorates 'Prophet' Jimmy Carter's 'Malaise' Speech (unbelievable arrogance and elitism)

Leave it to Chris Matthews, a former speechwriter to Jimmy Carter, to actually commemorate the 30th anniversary of the former president's infamous "malaise" speech. On Wednesday's "Hardball," Matthews invited on his former bosses from the Carter White House, former speechwriter and now New Yorker senior editor Hendrick Hertzberg and former aide Gerald Rafshoon to mark the event and claim that Carter was vindicated by history as Matthews proudly asserted Carter was "Dead on," about "putting on a sweater, lowering the thermostat," to solve the energy crisis. And Hertzberg did Matthews one better by proclaiming Carter a "prophet."

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Rick it seems to me Carter was dead on, on the need for energy sufficiency and dealing with the energy conservation. Putting on a sweater, lowering the thermostat. All of those things made sense. He was right about the problem of nuclear proliferation. Of arms getting to countries like Iran. He's way ahead of his time on that. And also his concern for human rights. Right? So he was right, but?

HENDRIK HERTZBERG, NEW YORKER, FORMER CARTER SPEECHWRITER: Well he was, he was in this particular speech, especially, which was really unlike anything that he had ever said, it was unlike anything any president had ever said. In this particular speech he was sort of a prophet. He spoke as a prophet. And, and I mean by that, not as someone who is predicting the future but as someone who is diagnosing, diagnosing the national soul. This was something that an awful lot of people in the White House, Vice President Mondale foremost among them, did not want him to do. I was one of those who thought it was, that it stood a chance of really breaking through....

Yeah, President Peanut sure showed how to keep the White House air conditioner running while the fireplace was going during his fireside chat. Meanwhile interest rates were perking along at 18% and our country was the laughing stock of the world with his “leadership.” Way to go, Jimmah!

Yeah, people fail to realize that in tanking our economy so badly, he was just protecting the rest of the world from our dangerous consumption.

Obama is so generously doing the same thing.

Nope. Credit for that goes to Amy, not Jimmy.

Jimmy Carter was one of the worst, most incompetent Presidents this country ever had. The fact that liberals still worship him says something about their inability to learn anything and their willingness to repeat the same mistakes.

Interesting that Matthews is still a sore loser after almost thirty years.

What amazes me is that a lib would even mention it. James Hurl Carter's Malaise Speech was the low point of the worst presidency in US history. He was proved wrong in the eight years after he was so decidedly sent back to Plains.

If I were a liberal, I would consider Matthews a turncoat for bringing the subject up.

Thanks for posting. To this day, if you call the Carter Center in Atlanta (and I have) and ask them about the “malaise” speech- they say Carter never gave such a speech. Thanks for posting the YouTube of the speech. One more example of Carter the dictator loving incompetent, who is on the payroll of the Saudis.

Putting on a sweater helped resolve this?

Second comment- I remember during Carter the 18-21% interest rate. Fixed rate investors were ecstatic. But we had massive inflation, stagflation. A difference with Obama printing money is that this crew will make certain there is no recovery, and no possibility of inflation, let alone price fluctuation. You have to have a private sector to have inflation. Of interest is the Taibbi article from Rolling Stone that proposes the next “bubble” which will be manipulated if we don’t stop cap and trade- it is the carbon credits bubble, created by Goldman Sachs and useful idiot global warming fools. Controlled socialist dead economy. Thanks again.
