The largest utility in southern California urged consumers on Monday to conserve power to help keep air conditioners running without interruption as hot weather sends demand soaring over the next few days.
Temperatures in Los Angeles will reach the low 90s Fahrenheit (low 30s Celsius) Monday and Tuesday with the humidity making it feel more like the low 100s F (high 30s C), according to AccuWeather.com.
Edison International's Southern California Edison utility said its transmission system was performing well but the continuing multi-day heat wave and lighting caused some isolated equipment failures and scattered outages.
As the heat continues, the utility warned it was possible other equipment might fail because of the high ongoing usage.
The California Independent System Operator, which operates much of the state's power grid, forecast demand this week, would not top the all-time usage record of more than 50,000 megawatts. The ISO forecast demand would reach about 44,400 MW on Monday and 45,200 MW on Tuesday.
While saying it expects to have sufficient resources to meet demand this week and throughout the summer, Southern California Edison noted conservation could provide an added reserve should an unexpected power emergency occur.
Unexpected emergencies could include mechanical problems affecting a major power plant or wildfires shutting down a major transmission system.
Southern California should see some relief Wednesday when high temperatures fall to the low 80s...

Gee let’s hope those windmills are turning and the wind is blowing exactly right during peak demand times. It would be ironic if all those California tree hugger environmentalists couldn’t get their Blackberries and I-pods charged because the wind wasn’t blowing.
lol...me neither.
Nuke power makes too much sense, and the utilities would have to reduce their rates if we put more nukes on line. As it is now, they'll tell you to conserve, then increase your rates, use too much, rates increase. Talk about building nukes, rates go up.
112,
Can you imagine what life would be like in 112 and the lectricity croaks?
When I go to Vegas I always drive to Death Valley Junction.
I can grill a steak on a rock as long as I have a cooler of ice and beer and a car with a great air conditioner.
Yes.
Can’t imagine.
I could never understand the draw to places like Phoenix...It’s great in the winter, but 6 months out of the year, those people live like lizards, hiding under rocks and staying indoors. We have friends there, and they keep their AC on 24/7 months at a time.
I live in the Sierra, and it’s been over 100 for the last week and a half. I don’t have air conditioning, and I’m about OVER IT!!!
I’m here in the central san joaquin valley between Bakersfield and Fresno and it’s HOT HOT HOT!!! It was 108 in Fresno yesterday and 111 in Bakersfield. The humidity is quite low, but still.... Forcast is for these types of temps for the next ten days or so. So whatever the electric bill runs, I’ll pay. I have misters running in the kennel for my dogs and one running out under a tree for my mules. It’s always a bear this time of year. Around here we get cabin fever in the summer not the winter.
Our air conditioner broke down on the July 4th weekend. It was 109. At least we has several fans going, but it was a looong weekend.
The big valley is always hot in the summer, all the way up to Redding. I guess that’s why crops do so well there. Keep those dogs and mules cool!
I always wanted a mule!
We have two “wings” to our house, each with its own central AC.
As long as we have electricity, we can stay cool.
It seems to me that they have had so many foreclosures in California, it really ought to make a dent in power consumption this summer....
Come on Jeff, Unless you live in Flagstaff, of course you know 112 and plus living in the furnace that is Arizona.
I’m with you, NEVER liked Phoenix.
Never liked having to sleep during the day and driving at night cause it was lava hot during the day.
Then again the brew pub in Flagstaff across from the train station is one fine place in this world.
